92 YJ; can i install power steering

well Gentlemen,

I had to say goodbye to the ZJ, however, many of her parts will live on with the new 92 YJ I just grabbed.

now, there is a long laundry list of small issues to fix, which is no big deal. however, the jeep doesn't have power steering.

so,, what do I need to do to add power steering? its a 92 with a 4L.

now, I have a power steering pump and a good steering box off my 95ZJ. i'm assuming I will need the bracketry from an XJ or something to make it work?

any tips? advice?

thanks guys, its great to be back in a YJ

It's a 4.0L and it doesn't have power steering? That's a bit strange unless the PO did some work on it. You'll need the steering box, hoses, and the pump. I believe the pump on the ZJ has the combined pump/reservoir so you may need to see if it will interfere with your airbox.

I would imagine getting YJ bracketery would be a good start, or something. Maybe like Louie says some hoses and a few nuts and bolts to put it all together would be plus. How about a belt ? No not for your pants but for the accessory drive.

In all seriousness, you have almost 2000 posts and your asking newbie questions like this ? C`mon share your knowledge with others, or something.

Sometimes you need to just dive in and see what happens. It appears that you have the parts and should have the know how to take on such a task.

...but if you want more assistance, here is what I dug up:

It is really not a difficult project. At least it wasn't for me with my '94 2.5L. The pump mount and alignment is the hardest part. I'm not a auto mechanic, so if I can do it, so could you. Louie already posted the link to my thread when I did it seven years ago.

If you have any questions, feel free to PM me. I'll do my best to help.

ok. quick update cause I deleted the long winded post I did before.

VERY easy swap. you need: power steering pump, steering box and power steering bracket from a YJ with power steering. then its BOLT IN. biggest issue was connecting the steering shaft. easy easy.
\
so ya. converting non power steering/ manual steering to power steering is easy if you buy the right parts...... I do not have a junkyard solution; but with stock YJ parts its all plug and play

I'm glad you got it all worked out.

You should do a write up on it, since no one else ever has.

I could do that. if for anything when people google it they have something cause I thought it would be a lot worse than it was; granted you have to buy a lot of stuff but I think it was worth it!

Take lots of pictures. And keep in mind that there's differences between engine size and years of manufacturing. If you want, you can use my pics too.
