90yj engine into a 92?

can you use a 1990 engine in a 1992 yj and use the 1992 injection system?
are the engine blocks the same? is the head the same?

Heads are different. The '90 is a 4.2 ltr head and the '92 is a 4.0 ltr head. Blocks are the same. But from everything I've read, the fuel injection will work with either motor. But I'm still a novice on these, so I'd let the experts chime in on this one.

You can do it, but it won't be legal. Legally, you must swap a newer engine into an older vehicle.

Not in all states or counties is it that way in Albuquerque. I know it is not in Cruces then again we do not have Smog checks down here. I know in California you have to swap newer and same cylinder size.
