90 YJ ??? What if???

New member, second attempt at first post.
I and most of my coworkers are vets. This being said we tend to have different discussios than most. So... we got on the topic of an EMP proof Jeep. Most of us are current or former Jeep owners and all have experience with molding them. So to the part where I ask the question.

What is the most basic whire set up we can do on a YJ 258? I Dont want anything the motor doesn't need to run. This will be with; motor craft carb, manual trans, manual choke, and manual 4x4 cable. Thanks in advance for all the responces both helpful and otherwise!

To just make it run use a HEI distributor. You would need power for the dizzy and power for the starting circuit. Obviously you would need a basic charging system also. Actually if its a manual trans you don't need a start circuit.. Just a strong back to push it.

If you wanted to get super safe, no electronics you can go 4bt cummins with a manual fuel pump cable. Push start, and drive. No electronics needed, just make sure you park at the top of a big hill every time you park it.

88 YJ 35's 8.8 rear, family style roll bar, ax-15 external slave conversion, Custom double D fab dash 4" of lift taurus fan, Head light wiring upgrade, MSD 6al, JB conversions SYE, 258 with RV cam, Long tube headers, Borla exhaust. 1"mm, Auto meter gauges.

Grudge if it has wiring and a computer the best you can hope for is to make it emc resistant, emp proof is not going to happen unless you run it with rubber bands. I work in an Electromagnetics test lab and I can tell you that anything that has electronics I can operate or cause to fail with the right frequecy and power level. If you are looking to make it resistant there we case studies done in the 50's and 60's with cars and consumer goods exposed to the emi from a nuclear blast. They were drivable after the emp pulse but were knocked out from the broadband pulse generated.

The nutter bypass gets rid of the computer, go to a old style point distributor and coil like the CJ and put ferrites on the power wires to the alternator and the coil. A shield can be made for the distributor and coil; we had them on the egyptian military jeep. Also twist all the power and ground leads. Run a ground strap for the hood and another to the exhaust.

That should do it!

Can you get away with just the manual fuel pump on the 258? That's all my 74 CJ5-304 had. And it definitely used more fuel!

Yes, mechanical pump is what they came with.

What about a steam engine and oil lamps for head lights. Or even have it pulled by a horse.

There are 2 types of material for shield that you worry about permeability and permittivity. Permiability is the electrical field and it is easy to deal with. Shielding on a coax is a good example of shielding for it. Steel will work. Permittivity is magnetic and it is very very difficult to shield. There are subtances called Mu-metals that you use to shield for them. Exotic and expensive. They are generally not very malable without compromising the effectivness of the characteristics. The do come in a foil sort of like aluminum foil. You would make a steel cover for coil, and distributor making sure they have a good contact to ground then cover them with the mu-metal.

OK. So where can I get mu-metal? This is a project for the fun of it only so we are not looking to go way overboard on expenditures.

Also the fuel pump; I was thinking my old 89 had both a mechanical and electric pump, but that was a total different project from days past. It wasn't even a jeep system I was thinking of!

The 4bt diesel mentioned doesn't need the electronics. The mu can be found on line. Just Google it.

Yea. Fuel pump was my past projects getting in the way of new ones! Way to many things going on up there!!!

The MU-metal is on eBay! Looks like about $150 for enough to do the job!

I have wanted to go 4bt for years but don't have the cash!!!

No comments on the gasification???

Ok... so I just sent out an offer on a 94 YJ with a 4.0. Obviously the 4.0 has to go! I also sourced a 91 4bt. Will be scrapping a bread truck soon! So the frame off restoration will start in a week or two. Offer being excepted of course. Will need all the 4bt help I can get.

I thought this was a hypothetical discussion? The 4bt is a pretty comin swap now a days.. I have a buddy who did one on his yj and actually made $15 by parting out and scrapping the rest of a bread truck. Made decent coin from recying the aluminum side panels.. Make sure you pull it off and scrap it seperately so you get paid the higher price..

Just store extra parts in a faraday box. And put them on after the blast.

Waiting on my Rough Country lift to sag!
