'90 Wrangler won't pass smog!

I have more than 6k invested in my Wrangler, new engine, trans, top, brakes, radiator, hubs, battery, carb, etc. and it still won't pass California smog. I have had the 02 sensor replaced, cat converter was changed out 2 yrs ago, it has a new carb, timing set, new plugs, wires, etc and it comes close but still won't pass smog. I have all this $ invested for use in snow area where I will be living. (my life could depend on this jeep) I really need to use it! My mechanic (who has never let me down ever) can't seem to figure it out. Any help would be appreciated!

Emissions

I will have to get them from my mechanic but as I recall he said the hydrocarbons were the problem. (I thought this was odd because the converter isn't very old)

How did he set up and tune the carb?

Have you checked for blocked idle bleeds, happens even on brand new carbs with the bad gas sold these days.

Is your mechanic using an exhaust gas analyzer to set it? This is a must where you are, can't be guessing on it.

A TEMPORARY fix is run your tank down to about 1/8 tank premium then add 4 quarts of rubbing alcohol it will much run cleaner after you pass go full up with premium

The 5.7 in my jeep just has cherry bombs and my HCs are 80 when I add rubbing alcohol and 140 without. I also have a fairly lopey cam.

Better check it with a sniffer first.

Rubbing alcohol has water in it.

Not enough to harm your engine in that small of amount... But I would check how your carb is tuned and read your plugs. And possibly put some hotter plugs in

If it is really close creating a small vacuum leak can sometimes work ,it did for me last year

Turns out the new carb had to be tossed (ouch) it didn't have the recall mods required for california, That meant another $340 to rebuild the old one. My mistake for buying a new Rallye brand Carb online. (warranty already expired waiting for engine and trans rebuild)

The problem was hydrocarbons at 15 mph... who drives 15 mph anyway!!!

I'm waiting for a new carb to come in to try to pass here in Texas.

I'm interested in this rubbing alcohol thing. If I understand what was posted above, I leave 1/8 tank of premium in and then add 4 quarts of rubbing alcohol? 4 QUARTS? What comes in the drugstore is pints. Do you really mean quarts or do you mean the pint bottles? If you mean quarts, I could get a gallon at the hardware store. But I don't want to add too much...

I meant pints sorry. And the rubbing alcohol trick should just be used as a temporary fix until you can fix it properly... Also after you pass the test fill Your tank with premium fuel again.
