89 YJ flooding itself out.
My Jeep had set for 2 months before I got it and I have been working on it and now driving it. I took it on the highway last night and after getting off the highway I came to a red light. I stopped and the Jeep stalled on me. I could smell gas really bad. I tried to start it and it wouldn't start. After I held it to the floor and it started back up. Now if I'm driving it the Jeep will stay running fine. When I stop at a light or stop sign it floods out. Will Carb and Chok cleaner fix this or do I need a new carb? Please Help.

The accelerator pump could be junk or the floats on your carb are sticking, the choke pull off may be sticking or needs adjusting

Put criminals in nursing homes. They will have cold meals, lights off at 7pm, one bath a week, live in a smaller room AND will be forced to pay $4,000- $8,000 a month! It's pretty damn sad that we treat prisoners better than the elderly. |

I've heard of the Choke sticking which can cause your exact DX. From what I understand it's a common thing to happen in these types of enginges. I'd start with checking that. its a simple peek.

Sound like float needles not seating properly. If it sat for a while I'd suspect the rubber tips have deformed.

I'm going to try pulling the carb off this weekend and see if I can clean it out a bit and see if it helps.

Exactly correct....I just took my carb apart and cleaned it....The rubber was fine but the body of the needles were so gunked up they wouldn't work properly....I took an hour or so and cleaned each and every little part and put the whole carb back together....Doesn't flood anymore.

Sorry I guess I should of add this also. It's a 6 cyl the 4.2 and carburated stock engine. Also an automatic. As of tonight it only seems to flood when trying to start it. I tried some cleaner and also tried some starting fluid to get it started and it didn't really help at all. After I get it running now it act's as if it's not getting enough gas. I changed the fuel filter tonight and I'm waiting for a fuel pump so I can change it also. The fuel pump on it looks new but I understand they can go bad being new also. Sorry that I forgot adding the engine info before.

Already sussed that
![]() Don't think it's going to be the pump. I would pull the carb and clean it out .. paying attention to the float needle valves and seats. If there's crap in the bowls I'd really spend some time in there with some carb cleaner. There's a few passageways that might be partially clogged up.

You don't .. it's a mechanical fuel pump (not electric).

Use a 1/2" wrench to remove the fuel line and then a 9/16" wrench to remove the fitting....Pull the needle out of the fitting and clean both the needle and the inside of the fitting....Reinstall an see how it runs.

No need to replace the fuel pump... Get a carb rebuild kit for less then $20 at the local auto store and follow the directions to rebuild the carb. Also are you starting it correctly? You should push the pedal once to the floor release it then crank it. If you pump the pedal while cranking ,it will flood.
