89 to 96 t case swap

will a 96 np231 out of wrangler work with my 89 i know the 96 has vss can i make it machanical and are the splines the same

im not positive but I think the 89 has a 21 spline, and the 96 has a 23 spline, but you can swap out the main shaft its very easy,just becareful with the pump pick up be shure its reinstalled.

Your transfer case has a 21 spline input shaft that you could swap into the new transfer case that has a 23 spline. Not sure about the other differences, someone else will chime in. I know it has been done so a little searching and you will figure out what you need to do.

Edit: I see that you have an AX15, so it should be 23 spline already
