Pull the cluster.

On the back it's got a plastic flexible circuit map. Use a pencil eraser to clean up all the contacts.

It's prolly just got dirt and green stuff from moister on it.

30 minute job.

couple of things to check. If you can get to the wiring that leads to the back of the cluster, use a multi-meter to check the resistance of the tan wire. the YJ sending unit is 0 ohms empty, 88 ohms full. if you are not getting any reading or something outside of this range, chances are you have a bad sending unit. from what I've been abel to tell, there aren't any aftermarket sending units that will just drop into the YJs tank.

FWIW, YJs are notorious for bad gas gauges/sending units. Best bet is to fill it up and keep doing so every 180 miles or so. I set my trip odometer at every fill up and figure out my milage.

I believe the cluster from 87 - 91 is the same it may be 87 - 95 but not sure after the FI was added. Hope this helps. Most here have made peace with there dysfunctional gas gage mine stays on full for a while then when it gets to about a quarter tank I am empty. I carried around a small gas can at first until this was consistent data.

I've got the same problem and just figured out I can get 220 mi. out of a tank, so i fill up at 200. I'm pretty sure I ned a new sending unit as well but will try the pencil eraser trick first.
