88 YJ Build Thread

Brief history, I have had this Jeep since 1993 and it was my DD until about 5 years ago. Pretty much been sitting in garage except when we have company (and a few adult beverages), we take it out back of the neighborhood and mud a little(boy do we). Doing that has messed up a few things.

I am now trying to make it my DD again to save some money on car payments. I have replaced a broken Exhaust manifold, Exhaust/Intake Gasket, new vacuum lines and coolant system hoses, new PCV Valve, and the old wire harness that I spliced together after an engine fire 8 years ago(with a harness from a 90YJ). Also an ISA motor(my motor actually fell off) and EGR Valve(mine was locked up)off of the same 90YJ.

Plans are to get it road ready again by OCT. 3. Thats when I have to turn in my lease (through work) vehicle. Tires, wheels, suspension, seats, floor liner are a must before then. Could do some small projects before, like a TJ flare swap or painting the dash or anything else YouJeepers can suggest . Later mods will be Paint(Probably Oklahoma Red with Sooners on the side of the Hood) and an engine swap.

Will keep the post up as I go and post pictures before the weekend and as I go. Money is kinda tight so it wont be an all at once thing..

9. Dash lights - New (#194 $2.99 a 2 pack, 4 packs)
10. Exhaust/Intage Gasket - New
11. Thermostat (190) - New

13. Transmissin Mount - New $30
14. Torque Arm bolt/bushings - New
15. ASD Relay switch - New $5
16. Fuel Pump Relay Switch - New $5
17. Coolant system Hoses - New
18. Side Mirrors - New $30
19. ISA motor - Used (included w/exhaust manifold)
20. EGR Valve - Used (included w/exhaust manifold)
21. Engine Harness - Used ($50)
22. Exhaust Manifold - Used ($15)
23. Starter Relay Solenoid - Used ($4)
24. TJ Pass Seat - Used ($40)
25. Seafoam Treatment - ($5 can)
26. Cleaned CTS - Same Free
27. Cleaned Inside Gas Tank - Same Free
28. Fixed 4x4 vacuum Used (Came with harness)
29. Painted Dash & Pad (Krylon Fusin $4 per can, 2 cans used)
30. Replaced Dash Torx Head bolts w/SS #8 Hex Heads New ($20 for all Dash & WShield Mount Lowe's)
31. Sanded and Painted Floor (Rustoleum Flat Black $4 per can, 2 cans used)
32. Painted Fender Flares (Krylon Fusion 1 can, rustoleum flat black 1 can)
33. Replaced All Vacuum Lines in Eng. Comp. New $30
34. Bought used Tuffy Stereo center console $150
35. Sony Radio $100
36. Kenwood 4"speakers $50
37. Heater blower upgrade (pm102) $20. best money spent so far.
38. Clutch Kit, install myself, $135

I broke the starter relay solenoid that goes on the firewall. gotta go get a new one today. So I can fire her up

well the part was not in stock, so I guess I am going to PullApart to pick one up off of a xj they have there.

I am working on getting pics posted hopefully before the end of the week. Already have them just need to post I guess with a link to something like photobucket?

looks like a good base. You definitely have to tell us about the bullet dent/hole though.

Yeah it is a good base no rust (except some surface) just needs to be cleaned up a bit. As for the bullet dent, the reason its a dent is because it hit right where the interior fender well and outer wall meets and it was shot from a distance. Me and 5 other buddies(we were piled in)left a friends fishfry(in a not so good neighborhood, shouldnt have been there) while we were leaving I slowed down at a stop sign but decided to run it(THANK GOD) I heard a popping sound and thougt it was fireworks, turned back to my buddies and they were all ducked and covered so I gunned it. Found out from the State Troopers who arrested the kid later for something else that he shot a 38 out of a 9mm or viseversa that happened in 96' and that he just didnt think we belonged in his neighborhood. Gotta remember the town I was in was only 2300 people no big city.

Well thats fun. It already looks to have a little bit of lift from the pictures but maybe that's just the camera angles. It could use a pressure washin though.

Yeah needs a good cleaning. Havnt washed it in a couple months. As for the lift they are custom 3ton jack stands its sitting on LOL (there under the front and rear bumpers) . The stock springs are as flat as flat can get. I will be putting a RC 4" on it in the next couple of months. Dont do alot of offroading just hunting.
