8.8 swap...now axel tube is HOT
just finished 8.8 swap. put a 4.5 bds sua lift with aussie locker in it. driving home, i could smell hot gear oil. when i got home the tube and cover were very HOT to the touch. hopefully its the angle and i didn't fill it up enough, but im betting i have a warped tube. any help?
They can get pretty HOT I know mine is really hot to touch after a while of driving, but you shouldn't be smelling burnt gear oil. Did you change gears?? There is a break in period for new gears. If not how much gear oil did you put in?? I think I put in like 4 quarts. As dillard said pop cover and inspect. Right after I installed my 8.8 I was paranoid and thought the same as you and it turned out to be nothing. Now I have over 5,000 miles on mine and one trip to Moab.

YJ 5.2 magnum MPI, AX15, NP231 SYE, Dana 30 4.56 open/ 8.8 4.56 detriot locker. 1" shackles
2" BL, 4" stretch all on saggy waggy springs.
i took the cover off and found some metal shavings on the drain plug. was not a lot though. put fresh fluid in it. used 3.0 qts. used 75-140w. is this correct. its what i found on the web. rode it for about 10-15 miles. diff cover was pretty hot, tube was not as hot this time. should i add a little more oil? the diff is tilted for pinion angle and the cover is an aftermarket one, which is bigger than the stock.
Don't when you angle your pinion you have to also 'raise' the oil fill plug, but welding the fill hole and creating a new fill bung? I have seen this before on other rigs but never experienced it. When I did break in my gears. I was told to not drive more than 20 miles at a time or let it rest 30 minutes in between for the first 500 miles of the break in.
