8.8 backlash?

Does any one know what the tolerance for the backlash on a 8.8 is? I am setting up my spool and am a 10 thousands on my backlash good or no?

Should be. My 9" is 8-12. That's typical. 10 should be pretty spot on.

I think 8.8 spec is .008-.015.

If you're at .010 and your pattern looks good I'd say you're good to go.

Ok this is my first time messing with swapping carriers.........I didt check the wear pattern, I was told that all I need do was check the backlash and that since I wast adjusting the pinion depth that I did need to paint the gears!

In theory yeah you shouldn't need to check pinion depth of just swapping carriers, just another technique.

Personally I like to dial in the pattern and then check the backlash after to see if its "in spec."

I'm far from an expert though, so my technique may be bogus.

Thanks for the input guys, I took her for a drive into town today and it seems to run great. I was trying to listen for unusual noises (which is hard with no top, and pit bulls with 15psi in them) but all seemed good in the hood!

What exactly did you do? You just swapped out carriers, but kept the same ring and pinion?

If I was in your shoes, assuming you swapped carriers and kept the same gears, I would check to see if the marking pattern is acceptable. Also, you should have your dial indicator set up orthogonal to the direction of travel on the coast/drive for the most accurate backlash reading.

Also, I would think it rather hard to tell if your gears were set up poorly by listening for chatter unless the pattern was completely dicked up. However, you would find out after the pinion and ring gears bind under load and grenade themselves.

Yeah just change out the open carrier for a full spool and kept the same gears, You have me worried now haha I might open it back up to check the pattern soon (maybe) and I wast sure exactly how to use the dial indicator, how ever the back lash reading I took was almost identical on both carriers........

Its one of those things bro. In the world of machined parts you cannot assume that your open carrier is built to exact dimensions of the full spool when thousandths mean the difference between success and failure.

No I know there is no such thing as two identical products which is why I measured before and after (not properly from what you told me :/). but I measured both of them the same way........

I suppose as long as there is consistency in your practice it should yield consistent results. Its been a long time since i have setup a run pattern, but the backlash can be similar and the pinion depth can be off. This is an easy check by using some marking compound. It sounds like this may be your first rodeo, so a little tip. When you put the marking compound on the ring gear and start twirling it make sure that you apply a force in the opposite direct. Introduce some drag to the tires. This way you get a clear and unmistakable pattern.

Edit: Better safe than sorry.

If the backlash is the same from the one that came out to the one that went in you should be fine. The centerline of the carriers should all be the same. Thus the pinion depth does not change. If you decide to mark the gears have the papers in front of you and get a second pair of eyes.

My opinion is you will be fine

What kind of stuff do I need to check the gear pattern? I have put some miles in the spool now along with a wheeling trip with no problem but I plan on a 4 hr trip in the jeep at the end of this month so I pulled the diff to check it out. There is a little fine metal shavings in the fluid but I reused it last time I had the cover off and I am prettying sure those came from taking the old spartan locker out in favor of the spider gears. But here are a couple pics of the gears......

Ps that tooth on the ring gear was ground down to install the old cross pin!

You'll need some marking compound to check the pattern, if you decide to do that.

Frankly I think the advice to check the pattern is conservative, but I'd do it were I in your situation just for peace of mind.
