8.8 axle info

hey so i blew up the dana 35 yesterday with 30" at tires. got 8.8 to install but how far do i move the spring perchs? i have researched and found that the rear drive shaft will be seating to one side more than the other. is this true and how do i need to seat the rear up? thanks for any info.

ok i looked at it and it does not say anything about the measurement to move the spring perches.

Just grab your trusty tape measure and measure the difference. It is not that difficult and you will have the right answer much faster than you will get it on the forum.

Actually, it's easier than most think. Before cutting off the old perchs, mark the 'outside' of each perch. After cutting them off, simply move the new perchs 'outboard' 9/16" each side. This is simply splitting the 1 1/8" difference between the two axles and it will line up the springs on a YJ just right!

edit note: of course, its always best to mock up the axle and double check everything before welding.

The info is contained in the link.

Take another look at the "Semi Interesting measurements......chart". It's there.

Look at the "Distance between spring perches (o/c)" line. It's the 9th item down on the chart.

Take 40.5 - 39.25 = 1.25". Divide 1.25" by 2 = .625". This is the distance (on center) that they are too narrow on the 8.8 on each side. Move each of the perches outward from their stock position .625" & you'll be on-target.

Assuming you're talking about leaving or re-using your stock springs untill you get your RC lift ready, and if you hav'nt already cut the fac. perchs, then I would simply just bolt the 8.8 up as is. When 8.8's first became popular as a YJ swap, many guys were doing this and running them that way. All it will do is pull the shackles in a tad, (well, 9/16 to be exact. lol) and make it look like this \ / for awhile. But for temporary is should be no biggie. Then when you get your lift in, you can set you pinion where it needs to be.

I need to do this as well. But my problem is I have no old perches to go by. Axle is already been grinded up. Anybody have any idea what I need to do in this case?

you need to have your what lift you are going to put on it to properly set your pinion angle. I guess you still have a slip yoke on your t-case well you have to have a certain angle when running a driveshaft with a u-joint at each end and you will probably end up putting a SYE when you do a 4" lift then you will need to set your pinion angle completely different. when you get your lift and set your angle your pinion is going to be pointed a lot more skyward than it is right now.

I have got an 8.8 in my garage right now that I have not cut the perches off. I will give you some measurements and that should get you in the ballpark. but like previously stated make sure you mock it up to make sure everything looks right before you weld it.

11 9/16 drivers side and 8 3/4 passenger side from the inside of the spring perch to axle housing where the axle tube goes in.

Just remove the D35 and throw it away.
Place the 8.8 under the jeep, put the perches on the axle install the U bolts but do not tighten.
Center the axle under Jeep and set pinion angle, double check everything. Tack weld the perches.
Remove axle and weld perches to tubes, install shock mounts, perm install axle, hook up brakes install drive shaft using correct adaptor. Test drivem Drink Beer.
