5.2L Magnum Swap - What's needed?

Hi there,

So I'm considering of doing an engine swap of a 5.2L Magnum engine into my 93 Jeep with 4 angry squirrels. I want to start collecting parts, and I've comprised a mental list so far, but I do have a couple of questions on parts and certain aspects of the modifications.

I plan on getting a 5.2L from either a Dodge Dakota, or Grand Cherokee. First question being what years have the MPFI? I want to use an AX-15, so I can keep my NP231J. I'll get the 23 spline input shaft, and a Dodge Dakota Bell-house to link the transmission to the engine (I believe?). I will get the Wiring harness and Computer with the engine, and Motor Mounts/Headers from Novak.

So here's the section on the couple of questions I have. Will the AX-15 need new Transmission mounts welded on? Next, Will the 92-96 Dakota Bellhousing link the Transmission to the Engine directly?

Here's a parts list, correct me if I missed anything?
-5.2L Magnum Engine
-ECU from Engine
-Wiring Harness
-Novak Motor Mounts
-Close-to-Block Headers
-92 to 96 Dodge Dakota Bell housing
-23 input spline for NP231J
-Longer/Shorter Drive Shafts
-Possibly New Radiator

I appreciate any help on the subject, Thanks in advanced

I thought about that, however I had too many problems with my past vehicles that were carbed. I like the OBD-1 engines with either TBI or MPFI, cause they're just easier to work on.

What transmission are you using for this swap?

Your AX-5 isn't going to last behind a 5.2L. Make the upgrade to an AX-15 or NV3550.

If you use an electric fan and mod the headers then you can move the engine back 1.5 inches or so towards the firewall allowing you to use your stock drive shafts. Otherwise you will need custom length shafts.

You are going to need a new radiator.

Backwoods offroad has a lot of information about the swap. I am planning a 5.9L swap on my TJ in the next few years.

I'm using one from from a 1992 dodge truck for this swap and a 727 trans. I believe 92 was the first year for smpfi.

I planned on going with the AX-15, I hear that the NV3550 is quite noisy. Also, I'd rather just modify the NP231J from 21 spline to 23 Spline, while doing a SYE for this swap.

What do you mean by modding the headers?

Depending on where you get your engine from (you said yours is from a Dakota) the headers, may or may not allow you to move your engine back further towards the firewall.

I have heard that Durango headers work better for swap in to a SWB Jeep but have only read this and haven't performed the swap yet. I am trying to learn as much as I can about a 5.9 swap before doing it. Especially stuff about the wiring and programing the PCM.

AX-15 should hold up fine.

exhaust manifolds from a grand cherokee work very well and will allow you to move the engine back 3 inchs leaving lots of room for stock fan from 5.2/5.9

Thank you Sir. I will look into that. My biggest concern besides the exhaust, which you just helped alot with, is Getting the 5.2L to mate to the AX-15. Should be tons of fun

well if your dead set on staying with the ax15. easiest way is to find a bell housing from a dodge dakota. dont remember the years but the ax15 was used in them behind both the 3.9 v6 and the 5.2. I converted mine to an auto at the same time
