5.2 swap or 4.0 swap

Im looking to finally swap out my 4 banger from my 94 jeep wrangler im debating on buying a cherokee with a 4.0 and a automatic transmission or a grand cherokee with the 5.2 v8 with an automatic trans just wondering which one would be the better investment also if anyone could post past write ups on the engine swaps that would be a great help thanks

I wouldn't use the auto tranny from the XJ Cherokee. First downside is it is computer driven rather than mechanical like a chevy 700r4. The second downside is that the "overdrive" really isn't "overdrive" rather it has 1:1 torque converter lockup which is not overdrive. And finally, I int believe it offers much crawl advantage as it has a shamefully high first gear.

Tough call though, honestly I would go with 4.0 and if u want an automatic I would honestly stick with a tf999 or chevy 700r4 with the appropriate adapter. The 700r4 has a relatively low first gear (awesome) and true overdrive (awesome), and no silly computer to run it(awesome).

5.2 + AX-15, I went 4.0 first then v8. Skip the middle step and go v8, you won't regret it. He's right about the transmissions if you must have an auto you should go computer free if possible.

def just got v8. if your going to spend the money, then just spend it once!!

And nobody has mentioned it yet. But there is a lot more support if you go SBC instead of a grand cherokee motor. A chevy swap would be just as much work. But you'd have a lot more options for motor mounts, and be making more power. Plus a 700R4 would bolt right up and they're a lot easier to find than GC motors.

5.2 is in a gazillion dodge vehicles, not just grand cherokees, junkyards are full of them. Plus the obd1 (and possibly obd2) computer will work with the factory gauges and check engine light.

Or swap in a ford V-8 as chevy tends to suck. Really I'm a jeep purist, I think jeeps should be kept jeeps. I would do a stroked 4.0 up to a 5.0, or an AMC or chrysler V-8. With a ford or chevy engine you might as well just buy a bronco or blazer and be done with it. I built my 258 with an offy intake, holley 4 barrel, comp cam, rollor rockers, 4.0 head, header, DUI and MSD. It runs like a small V-8, but with plenty of room in the engine bay. Also the 258 makes peak torque at 1,800 rpm's, thats like a diesel, awesome for off road. A stroked 4.0 would be awesome as well.

I mean I would love to swap in a chevy 350 but when it comes down to it I think the grand cheokee 5.2 would be a good buy because im gonna buy the whole grand cherokee that way I will have everything I need but I was aondering what u guys thought about the 5.9 that comes in durangos and grand cherokees

My 5.9 came out of a dodge ram, they share the same block with the 5.2 with a longer stroke. There are tons of 5.2 and 5.9s sitting in bone yards and any of them would do. Just decide whether you want to go odb1 or odb2 and get a wiring harness to match, 96 and up are odb2. On my odb1 setup all the gauges work and even the check engine and upshift lights work like stock. Make sure you use a grand cherokee power steering pump though because the ram pump bracket sits out kinda wide and hit my steering shaft. The grand cherokee pump and bracket brings it back in and out of the way. A tj pressure side hose screws right into it and the stock return line works fine.

As for auto transmissions, I'll admit I'm not very knowledgeable there. I do know if you use a cherokee trans it will require a computer and more than likely a few wires from the computer will have to be run to it. I would try to use an auto that is not electrically controlled.

Get really good at reading wiring diagrams and soldering wires, cause you're gonna do a ton of it!

how about the grand cherokee transmission would that require computer alteration done to it as well ?

This is BS, aw4 from Cherokee is 0.75:1 overdrive. It is computer controlled but is pretty simple to wire up. That said, I would go with the v8. I did a 258 to 4.0, aw4, and np242 from Cherokee and wish I had just gone with 4.3 v6 or 5.7.

I have a durango with 4.7L v8 and from being on those boards I don't think any of the auto tranny's on the 5.2/5.9 were computerized like the 45rfe for the 4.7L and the 5.7L.

obdii grand cherokee transmissions are controlled by the combined engine and trans computer known as the powertrain control module. one computer, "one" harness.

'97 zj 5.2, some stuff, some other suff, and some things that even work sometimes.

A wrangler as light as they are don't need a V-8, depends on if you want an off roader, or race car. V-8's can be fun and hard on drivetrains. On my 87 258 I instaled a holley 470 TA 4 barrel, offy intake, comp cam, header, rollor rockers, head work, DUI, and MSD. It has plenty of power and yet not too much and still leaves plenty of room in the engine bay to work. The short of it is, that the 4.0 would be easier and give you all the juice that you need and they even have 5.0 stroker kits for them. However, if it's gobs of power you want, then the V-8 might be worth your trouble. It boils down to what you want from your jeep.

1987 wrangler, 258 I-6, 5-speed.
