4x4 wont come off

When i put the 4x4 on it works perfectly but when i try to take it off it wont. I have to turn off my car and just wait. It'll make a noise coming from the transmission and thats how i know it finally came off 4x4.

The transfer case is 100% mechanical, so I'm guessing you ARE out of 4x4, but the vacuum switch that activates the Center Axle Disconnect which in turn also controls the dash light "4x4" indicator is busted or gummed up taking a long time to release. The vacuum switch on the transfer case, or the vacuum source for the switch.

I'd bet you're out of 4wd as soon as you move the lever.
