if its a dana 300 then you need to see if the pivot is bent or in a bind
if it the 231 it mite have a bad shift frok
have you try to put tran in rev. then shift the tc

As I stated earlier...yes, that is the shift pattern for a NP231...with 2h being all the way forward.

All of them or just the front?

Look on the passenger side of the engine compartment for the red vacuum line and make sure that it is hooked up to manifold vacuum. If it is then you need to make sure that the line from the t/c is hooked up.

I would venture to say that you have a vacuum leak. You need to go to read the FAQ at the beginning of the YJ section. Go to the second post. Scroll down just a little bit and there is a write up on how your 4 wheel drive works. There is even a picture diagram with the colors and where they go for the vacuum. Good luck. Hope this helps.

Until you check vacuum like has been stated on this thread several times and then read the info on the system as suggested by LittleredJeep, you will continue spinning your wheels--both figuratively and possibly/or not in reality.

The red line from the tc goes to manifold vacuum! If this is not hooked up to manifold vacuum your front axel won't lock but the tc will go into 4wd! We've stated this, please follow what we tell you to look at because most everybody here has been through something similar, that's why we respond to the questions. I'm fairly new to Jeeps but I've been working on my own cars for almost thirty years. We are trying to help you out but you have to be willing to listen.

Go to a junkyard and find the passenger side axle shaft out of something with a D30 and just remove all the vacuum disconnect stuff.
