4 wheel drive slips when engaged and rolling forward

I was driving home from work and and U Joing snapped dropping my drive shaft down to the pavement. I couldn't call a tow truck because I was too far from town and didn't have cell phone service so with a pair of pliers I was able to detach the driveshaft. I threw it in 4 wheel drive (high range) and continued on my way taking it easy I still had about 70 miles to go. when I got to about 10 miles from my house the 4 wheel drive started slipping pretty badly making loud noises and I pulled over and had it pulled to my house. I replaced the U joing and put my driveshaft back in but when I went out to test the 4 wheel drive it was still slipping can anyone tell me what they think it is?

Possibly time to clean out that actuator and replace the vacuum lines to it? Not sure what else could cause it to slip like that unless there's some problems in the T-Case itself. Maybe an axle is stripping?

ok

Well I'm not mechanically inclined so I would have no Idea. It sounds to be like some sort of chain slipping of the sprocket but loud! but I do have a Hayne's manual and have spent a lot of money on rebuilding the transmission, and transfer case (before all this happened) so I hope it is something easy I can fix myself. I just bought a good floor jack and stands to actually get under it safely. so I will take a look but thanks for the reply and I hope to get any other Ideas from anyone.

you might have stretched out the chain trying to go that far with it like that, maybe it was worn and you finshed it off. pull the fill plug on the t case and maybe you can get a pinky in there if youve got small fingers to try to check for slack in the chain. Its fine in 2wd right ?

Yeah It's fine in 2 wheel drive. I need a brake job on both axles and it sounds like the bearings are going out and their are other mior problems I have but I will get into all that later. I've had it for about 10 years and have had a lot of fun with it, but since I started a family my money has been going elswhere, but now I'm at the point where I really want to start putting money and work into it and start to restore it. Has anyone ever had to replace a wiper motor on a YJ?

Its not too bad, you will need to fold down the windshield though. replace the cowl seal while your there, if its not already leaking it will be soon.

do you have a SYE? if not, did you put something over the tail housing of the T-case to keep the fluid from coming out wile you were driving?

driving 60 miles on the front axle, wile loosing fluid probably overheated the T-case, and stretched the chain.

You got it, the chain in your transfer case is likely stretched out and slipping over the gear it drives. New chain about $100 if I recall. Inspect the gears for damage as well.

CHAIN!!!!!!!

While you're in there you should look over your bearings and seals...they don't like heat either.

Thanks for the input, I will do planning on getting to it this weekend or whenever I have time off of work sounds like it's the drive belt inside the T Case I will check to make sure the gears aren't damaged and make sure the fluid is at the right level. I Found that drive chain for 105 but the Drive sprocket is 135 and the output shaft is 278 so I hope those didn't get messed up. I will see....

Yea, don't buy new you should be able to buy a whole t-case for 100 bucks or so. The chain would be one of the easier things to fix, and it's the only thing that I can think of. I couldn't imagine limping home 70 miles with the atf running out. I guess the parts stores were closed.
