4 PA Winters... And 4 New Windshields...

Alright... I've had my Jeep over the last 4 winters. And it seems that every year, I'm putting in a brand new windshield because something is kicked up off the road and puts a chip or crack into it.

Soo... What can be done? I'm sure my insurance company loves the < $500 claims and all.

The one this morning is just a very tiny chip... Can I fill it with superglue to hold it, or do I call in the professionals who come out and fill it with "something" (probably a lot like superglue).

I just don't want it to spread or crack and further... I could care less if it's there, since it's way over on the passenger side.

Thoughts and suggestions appreciated.

My insurance co pays for the windshield to be repaired. They even come to your home or business. The past repairs have been invisible and keeps the crack from spreading.

Can't help you with the superglue option.

The past 3 years, the glass company sent out from Progressive has deemed the crack unrepairable and replaced the whole thing... I'm just concerned that it's going to look bad if I look to switch to another company and have 4 years and 4 windshield replacements...

The fix (if it can be fixed) is free... But the replacements run $100. I felt the crack this morning and it's just a little chip... But, it looks like it's going to spread. I just thought if I could get a simple fix (like superglue, or... something else readily available) and avoid my insurance company, that'd be best.

Autozone sells kits that work great to stop chips from turning into cracks.

I would try that first. Extreme cold and hot will cause it to expand, it is better to get it plugged now then later.

Rule of thumb is that if there are cracks it is non-repairable. If it is just a dish then it can be fixed.

There is a little dish, except it looks like there are 2 tiny stands of cracks starting... Maybe I'll try the stuff anyways and see what happens.

Progressive has a deal with most glass shops.....they like to replace rather than repair. Just call the local shop yourself. They will be glad to repair it. Our paramaters are usally less than 6" long for cracks (length of a dollar bill) and equal to or smaller than the size of a quarter for bullseyes or star breaks. Super glue will NOT work. Repairs are done using a liquid acrylic that bonds the top layer of glass back to the laminate (PVB layer). After the air is evacuated from the break, the acrylic is injected under pressure and cured with a UV lamp. Done right, a repair should last forever.
Usually costs about $55 or less.

I grabbed some "Fix A Windshield" from Walmart... It was $10 and has enough resin for a couple of cracks and chips, so if it gets worse, I can try it again. The reviews online all says it works really well, so... I'll hope for the best.

If it does come down to having it replaced, I'd at least like to wait until the weather is a bit better so I don't have a crack in a new windshield from the salt on the roads...
