4.3 Liter in a Jeep!!!!!

What do you guys think about putting a 4.3 Liter Vortec in a YJ? My 4 cyl. is just too weak. I have access to a FREE rebuilt 4.3 and a FREE 700R4 transmission and transfer case. Is it against all the rules to do so?

I did not know if I would be banished from the Jeep community forever. The engine came out of an Astro Van and the Trans. came out of a Blazer. I paid $250.00 for both and pulled the parts I needed. Then took both vehicles to the scrap yard and made $450.00. So far I have made $200 and I have an extra engine. Of course I have put some hours into it.

Doggone it Rusty! If you hadn't have moved this thread, I would have beat you to linking him to Martin's 4.3L build page!

It's not worth it.
I'll be down in Kentucky in a month, I'll give you $50 for it if you also toss in a quart of liquid cornbread.

If I were to put a non AMC/Chrysler motor and drivetrain in my junk, it'd be a 4.3 and 700R4.

wonderful swap cept if you can get a TH350 its better IMHO then run a chevy (203 or 205 i cant remember) and new axles if needed/wanted waggy 44s or 60s would be a good choice then get wheels/tires to match and your set to do lots of stuff, then you can buy a supercharger or a turbo if you want to get fancy with it

That is an awesome engine. I'd rather have a v8 but a free, sweet, v6.. do it.

Swapping in GM engines is one of the most common engine swaps in a Jeep. Lots of people do 350's, etc. As long as part of the original Jeep is left, it's all good

I love my 4.3...in my boat. I run it around 5000 RPM WOT but Mercruiser built it to do that and Im not sure I'd want a higher revving motor than my I6. In a jeep I don't see the point. Is it easier than a 4.0 swap? Seems to me you lose horsepower and torque vs. the 4.0 but I,m not sue of the specs. All I'm saying is if I'm swapping for similar specs then I'll stay with Jeep (Chrysler) products. Then again it is free.

Horse power is about the same as the 4.0, but the 4.3 has more torque.

And it also lasts forever. There was one in my dad's work truck that was over loaded with tools and part 24/7. It was driven 98% in Baltimore City, and driven hard. Not a single issue up to 100,000 miles. Idled and ran smoother than a brand new 4.0. But then it was sold and replaced with another but I'm still impressed.

I DO LOVE MY 4.0 so don't get mad!

I have thought about that engine/tranny combo myself. I had a 1986 Chevy Astro with that set up & loved it. I sold the van last spring with 280,000 miles on it and she was still running strong.
