Great thread I have read this and started my own swap on my 88 yj. I have a problem and I think you can help. I swapped the head on the 4.2 that is in my jeep for a 91 4.0 cast#7120 the wiring harness is also from the same vehicle and AX-15 transmission and transfercase. I got it cheap, ( free). My problem is it will crank but not start. I have fuel pressure. What am I overlooking?

Its best to call, it could be several things... to list all of them would waste time and confuse. Feel free to call

Great thread! its been alot of help. and thanks for the phone help.

the back story: i swapped a 93 4.0+auto from a ZJ into a 90 YJ 4.2+ax15. i had the standard 5 wires to fire and it would start and run for 2 sec and die. the ZJ ecm had a security module mated to it that i didn't pull when we pulled the motor and harness so the pcm would cut fuel after 2sec. i ended up swapping in a pcm from a 93 chreokee sport. fires and runs perfectly.

thanks cevans87!!!

A lot of phone calls here lately, hope I have taken care of everyone. Everyone I have talked to, the problems were resolved over the phone. Any feedback would be appreciated. Hope everyone is having a great spring/summer. I have been doing little things to the scrambler, hoepfully soon can starting rolling with it and switch out the 304 to a 4.0L.

cevans87, been forever again.
I have been s l o w l y working on this, http://www.jeepstrokers.com/forum/vi...hp?f=15&t=2860
Now in the wiring pahse. Looked at my SJ today and removed the old dizzy feed. Did not have that connected since I tossed the control module and stock dizzy for a HEI about 10 years ago.
So I still have 2 wires on the fender mounted starter sol that I need to see if I can get by without them or maybe one, since I will be moving to the 4.0 starter. The, I think 91 cherokee, engine harness I have has the large and small starter wires molded together, simple. The same harness has the alternator wires molded together also, seen here http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f11/e...stion-1541378/
So I guess one of my questions is, should I try and find this alternator or keep the old one for the 258. (need to look at mounting options)
The other one is, since I have an old school A/C, engine does not change to compensate for A/C comp on, do I try and splice it into the A/C portion of the PCM so the new engne compensates or does it matter?
Some day this poor girl will get on the road.

thanks for any input gents

This is the best guide I´ve found about this swap, congratulations and thanks for your great job

I recently acquired an 89 4.2 YJ in very good conditions from the point of view of body and chassis but with a bulked 4.2 engine, so first thing I done was to buy a Renix 4.0L from an 89 Cherokee, I have all elements, including wiring harness, fuse box, ECM fuel lines, also with a auto trans AW4, I have about a week searching info about this swap because I was a little bit scared with electrical issues, but after I found this thread I became more optimistic and next week I will start with the swap.

Sure I will ask you for your help with some issues, hope a few questions because the thread contains every info I need, but always appears somethig and on the other hand, I´m from Romania and here we hav not all the sources you have there...

Thanks again for sharing this pretty good info

Hello I am fairly new to Jeep forum I hope you can help me with a couple questions. I plan to do the head swap and fuel injection swap on my 4.2 90 yj soon. I have researched it fairly extensively but some things I could not find an answer to.

the first is I am considering do a cam swap at the same time. I rebuilt a 4.0 in a cherokee that I had planned to swap in to the jeep but I have since decided to just swap the head since the 4.2 has less than 70,000 miles on it. I will keep the 4.0 shortblock wrapped in plastic till I need it. anyway my questions involve the cam and valvetrain. I bought a comp cams xtreme energy cam that was recommended on this site for the 4.0 and I was wondering if there is any reason it would not work in the 4.2. the applications chart at summit racing indicate that it should work so I believe it will, which brings up my second question. should I use the new lifters and pushrods I got for the 4.0 or does the 4.2 have different size lifters and pushrods. it is very difficult to find this information. I appreciate your help.

Hello everyone. Just wanted to stop in and give an update. Although I do not have the 90 Wrangler anymore, most of you know I have an 81 Scrambler. I was contacted by the guy who bought the wrangler and was informed that he was wheeling on the beach and forgot to cut the electric fan on and cracked the head. Stupidity is all I can say. Lately I have been searching for a upgrade for my brakes on the scrambler. I replaced the rotors, pads, shoes and wheel cylinders but could not find a good power brake setup for cheap. I tried an aftermarket unit a local guy had, it worked but would lock the brakes as soon as you touched the pedal. I was not willing to purchase and install a needed valve to lower the pressure from the corvette master cylinder. So after a little more research of which not much information was available, I decided to shoot from the hip and install a booster and master from a 1993 S-10. All I can say is WOW. Better than the brakes on my 08 Commander. I can lock up 33's very easily. The booster is a dual diaphram and not much was needed for the install. It bolted right up to the stock cj / yj braket, the only modification was welding the old cj booster eyelet to the new s-10 eyelet at 3.75 inches in total length from booster base to the end of the rod. Everything went together fine and bled very easily.
