ok so im stuck with the gauge as it is then, i was hoping to connect it up to the pc,
so it would do what the old gauge did and then get rid of the p0463 code fuel level sensor "A" circuit high.

x2 with SloKen, CCD and J1850 bus messages. That is the bad news. The good news is you have analog guages and with the right sensors it should be good. You are talking about the fuel pump needle moving up and down when you turn the corner but it reads accurate. You have fuel moving in the tank and the level changes as the fuel is pushed....sounds normal. If you want to slow it down then put a cap on the input as long as its reading accurate. If you search I am sure you can find the value someone has used to smooth it and slow it down.

You can search for dampening a fuel guage using google. There is a lot of info out there to sort through.

On the fuel guage input to the guage attach an electrolytic cap from the guage to ground. Observe the polatity on an elctrolytic cap!
I am not sure what value will be needed. Try a 10uF cap and if it doesnt work step to a 50 then 100uF cap. No garantee.

Cap = capacitor

Slosh is a well Documented issue on fuel gauges on older cars. Search fuel guage dampening and I bet there are hundreds of Google hits.

Your not going to hurt anything. My question is that it is not effecting the running of the Jeep and you have no Check engine light so why are you worrying about the fault. I dont see any reason to think it would cause any harm.

I've done that...

Working through hooking up the XJ Instrument Cluster to have a functioning Check Engine Light.... Beginning with the OBDII system in 1996, there is no longer a direct driver for a CEL from the ECM. The CEL driver is on a microprocessor in the instrument cluster, and is triggered via a CAN message sent from the ECM via the CCD bus. My intention is to have the XJ instrument cluster set up as a "black box" under the dash, and run leads to a CEL indicator in the dash. Below are the connector locations and pinouts for the XJ instrument cluster as found in the FSM. I've labeled the pins that I believe need to be connected to get basic CEL functionality.

Also, the OBDII datalink connector pinout. I believe all these need to be connected for full functionality.

what a great thread! So encouraging... over the winter will be installing '97 XJ harness etc. into a '91 YJ to run the 4.6 stroker I am putting together. So many questions answered! I think I should keep the donor XJ around until it runs from the sounds of it though.

How many old threads actually convince *you* to read all 36 pages? http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f12/length-envy-build-thread-629700/

it is certainly worth the effort,
also if you have a chance get a obd2 reader so you can read the codes before you place it into the yj.
i didnt do that but wished i did.
