4.0L Water Plug removal. . .

What do you use to remove the water plug on the driver's side of the block on a 4.0L engine?

It's bigger than a 1/4", but it's smaller than 3/8". . .at least I can't get a 3/8" socket drive into the recess.

Want to remove it to install a temp. sensor there for an electric fan conversion.

Thanks!

It is 5/16th`s. Waste a 3/8fh`s by grinding it down.

Thanks jsawduste. . .

. . .weird that it would be an unusual size like that for a square drive. I looked online on Craftsman, and at all the local parts store for a socket attachment that would fit with no luck. . .appreciate you cluing me in.

A modified socket extension isn't the best solution as it turns out. . .snapped right off where the detent ball is located.

Gonna make a custom tool to remove the water plug out of some 1/2" 4340 hex stock and mill a 5/16" square on the end of that. . .will be able to drive the tool with a 1/2" hex socket with the ratchet wrench this way. . .too bad I will only need to use it once.
