35's w/4:56 on a D35?
Hey guys, I got a deal on some 35x12.5x15's and i was thinking about throwing them on my rig. Right now I have a D35 geared at 4:56. I'm also in the middle of doing my 4.0l head swap on my 4.2l block. I kinda already know the awnser to this question, but i have to ask anyway. Will the D35 hold up as a DD with limited off roading until I can beef up the rear end, or will it snap the second I throw down on the throttle? Also, I'm in Alaska so I have limited access to junk yards and parts stores for a 8.8 swap. So I need to know exactly what to look for when looking for a 8.8 rear axle. Is there a link that shows what 8.8 are a direct bolt up job and what vehicles they can be found on? Preferably ones that are already geared to 4:56. Thanks much guys.

Answer 1 - IMO ...
I'd wait to put em on.Answer 2 - 8.8's are not a direct bolt in check the YJ forum FAQ for more. answer 3 - I don't think they came with 4.56 gears. (I could be wrong but, I think 4.10's are the lowest) |

I don't think 8.8s come in 4.56 stock. I think 4.10 is the largest. I also don't think any of the are bolt on as the perches are not in the right location. If there is a bolt on, I would like to know.
Generally, you want an 8.8 out of a 95+ Ford Explorer. The Ford Explorer's have larger spline counts than a Crown Vic. or Ranger. 95+ because they came with disk breaks in those years. Good Luck

My D35 blew up on the pavement under normal driving conditions when I was on 32s and alloy wheels. Now I'm on 33s and steel, and for some reason still running a D35

OP, I would advise not putting the 35's on, some people have wheeled their Jeeps with that setup fine, but a lot have also broke axles under normal driving conditions.

Being in Fairbanks Alaska, the last thing I want is to be stranded on the side of the road in -40 degree temp with a busted rear end. But man I would love to be rolling around in the snow on 35's. DAMN that D35!!!....DAMN it to HELL!!!!!!!
I just spent $600 last summer on re-gearing my d35.....I guess that was my first mistake. I could brobably find a 95 ford explorer easy enough for the axle, but then I would have to spend a butt-load to get it geared and installed. Good thing my 33's look really cool because they might be on there for a while.

If you don't plant your foot to the floor the D35 should be fine with 35's, I drove mine that way for 3 years

I know a guy running a D35 welded with 35's on a trail rig that gets wheeled every other weekend. But my yj project will get an 8.8 before it goes out of the garage.

i wouldn't worry about it i wheel the piss out of mine and have 33's with a locker and no problem yet, my buddy is running a D35 with 36'' Ground Hawgs with a locker as a DD and doesn't have a single problem out of it, don't fix it if it ain't broken. You need to get full use out of that axle and that $600 you put in it

I wheeled my d35 with 35"s for a while and didn't have a problem till it finally went, but it should have considering what I was doing. Some people have had them break on the road. I would find an 8.8 and start working on it so its ready when you are.
