3" exhaust system?

I'm looking to install a cat back exhaust system on my Jeep.
Now that I've got the 5.2 installed I would LIKE a 3" cat back exhaust system.
I realize I will probably have to use a 2.5" exhaust. Summit has a kit for a great price.
The exhaust shop here in town wants $600 to build an exhaust. I'm pretty sure that's insane.
I also need to know which 2.5" or 3" cat convertor to get...
I'll install the exhaust myself and just have a y-pipe installed.

Found one!

AFE makes a 3" cat back.
Think I'll do this w/a 3" cat.

3" may be a little big. i run a true dual 2.5" on my 5.2 yj and it flows everything it can plus some. your mufflers will tell the tale over the size of the pipe. i realize your running a single dump. there may be no detriment but i don't believe you will gain any performance from the 3", like i said my .02 is choose a quality performance muffler and keep the pipes at 2.5".

as hesser said... i had the headers, cat, and mufflers already in place, had the shop build me a set of tail pipes, and i walked away with less than a $200 bill to make tailpipes, hangars, and mounts.

When I had a 5.2 in my dakota, most guys would keep the 2.5" to the muffler and go to 3" from t back he muffler... especially with headers. The theory is back pressure... 3" would be too free flowing and wouldn't have enough back pressure. That's what I did anyways and it worked and sounded great.

I had a shop install 2.5" pipes from the headers into a y pipe, then 3" single pipe out the back for $350 including a 2 chamber Flowmaster. Flows and sounds great.
