Barely out worked the weather ....

The adapter plates are supposed to be in from the machine shop on sunday ; so had to remove transmission and x-fer case assbly.

( Don't make my mistake.... either unbolt trasmission assbly from skidplate or be sure to jack the vehicle up high enough to clear the shift levers ) ... boy was that a time consuming HEAD ACHE !!!! :hahah

THERE GOT THE PICS TO COOPERATE

Pics no longer cooperating !! sorry !!

UNLESS YOU JUST HAVE MONEY TO BURN ON FUEL ...... YOU WOULD BE BETTER OFF WITH A DIESEL !!!

IF I DRIVE IT " NORMALLY " I SHOULD GET 32 MPG AND IF I DRIVE IT LIKE I STOLE IT I SHOULD GET 23 MPG !!!

I HAVE HEARD OF SOME OF tHE CUMMINS GUYS IN 2 WHEEL DRIVE PICK UPS GETTING IN THE 40 MPG RANGE !!!

I want to put a 4bt into my fathers 89 dodge conversion van. I even have a 46-re that needs a rebuild and a new valve body to convert it to a 46-rh to go with the 4bt. Now if I only had the money and time.

Time to turn on the lathe and mill and start makin some adapters !!!

This is the adapter from the Mercedes crank to the Jeep 4.0L flywheel !! The center hole is a little on the BIG side so you can use an off the shelf Jeep Pilot Bushing / Bearing !!

Obviously NOT complete but you get the jest ..... I will be able to bolt the flywheel to the crank by tomorrow.

Stay tuned !!! I am having some troubles with my photo hosting service but I should be able to show you the JEEP flywheel bolted onto the Mercedes Crank by tomorrow morning .......

I did get all the old motor mounts removed and made some flat areas to weld in the NEW motor plates/mounts and gussets when the time comes !!!

My machinist is taking ALL the measurements so if anyone wants to follow along with minor hassles and get great fuel economy just let me know !!!

Looking forward to seeing the progress and hearing about the challenges with this swap. Do you have any plans to dyno this thing, or are you just going straight to the trails to see how it handles. Either way, keep us posted!

info learned on Diesel bombers

This is a compacted list of everything that I’ve learned on 87 jeep wrangler (617 coversion) - Diesel Bombers
It was the fuel economy that sparked the interest in the Mercedes 5cyl diesel into a Jeep Wrangler swap. I have seen a lot of interest in this project and it can be done.
Wrangler with 3.0 td turbo charged Mercedes diesel engine mated to ax-15 Jeep transmission. The engine is completely mechanical and has no computer making it easier to perform the swap. Your able to transfer all sensors from the Jeep to the Mercedes engine so even the engine gages work as they should. The fuel pump is mechanical and not electric; using the same Jeep fuel tank only making the opening for fuel nozzle bigger. (You may have to go with older fuel tank if it will fit from jeep 87-91.)
The engine mounts must be modified using the original Mercedes motor mounts and bushings. All that is needed is cut off old brackets from jeep. Make new brackets, reinforce them and welded them to the frame.
You reuse the stock jeep radiator. It looks like the jeep has enough room to fit an intercooler in front of radiator. Maybe look at the Volvo turbo intercooler. The power steering hoses were soldered to Mercedes fittings and your able to use original steering gear box.
The vacuum pump needs to connect to your brake booster. Take the original MB line that goes all the way to booster and remove the plastic line and use a rubber hose with a vacuum t connector and put a one way vacuum check valve and connect it all to the booster. The t fitting you will need to connect the rest of your vacuum system on your engine as well as some of the jeep stuff that runs off of vacuum.( fuel pump shut off, some front diff’s)
You will use the stock 4.0L flywheel and starter. Take the stock jeep flywheel and make it fit the Mercedes engine. MB have 12 holes and jeep has 6. Weld the holes and redrill them to fit Mercedes crank.
(measure twice drill once) Use the bolt hole spacer plate that MB has to mock up bolt holes. (When replacing the flywheel, the balance of the engine should be maintained as much as possible.)
Use the stock needle pilot bearing from jeep and also use a ford pilot bearing #14656 (Advance auto parts Ford 1968-86 302,351,400 cu.in.) It fits perfectly into Mercedes crank (outside diameter) then you drill the inside to fit the jeep needle bearing (measure twice cut once)
And as for the adapter you have to be patient and do lot of measuring. You make the adapter use nothing special; just stuff in your garage torches, drill, grinder, welder etc...Use 5/16 steel plate for the
adapter which makes the transmission input shaft fit perfectly into the pilot hole. After finding the center shaft hole use a hole transfer tool and transfer 3 bell housing holes and drill them into 5/16 steel plate. Then put the bell on it and drill the rest of the holes that are used.( Don’t drill bolt holes for starter just yet to be assured your 100% aligned.) Then move over to center of MB block and transfer the dowel pin holes to the 5/16 plate (measure twice drill once) insert the dowel pins and use original MB adapter and drilled rest of the holes. You will need to have 6 holes drilled for engine side (4 bolt holes and 2 dowel pins if I remember correctly)
You want to change the starter over to the Driver side to keep it away from the turbo heat you can use a 97 Dodge Dakota either 3.9 V6 or 5.2 V8 BELLHOUSING .... BOTH Bells will mount the starter to driver side and keep it away from the turbo'd exhaust manifold and they have all necessary provisions to mount the clutch ( just like stock JEEP ) You will need the bell and ALL associated clutch parts if you donor is post 1994. It is a direct BOLT-ON to either a nv3550 or ax 15 transmissions and the WHOLE REASON this is suggested is to move the starter over to the driver-side to keep it out from under the turbo and exhausts HEAT !! Extend the starters wire’s by 12 to 18 inches ( under the oil pan ) and you are good to go !! You use the stock 4.0L flywheel and starter it just moves it to the driver’s side away from the turbo heat ($75 dollar salvage yard bell housing)
It has been done without the Dakota flywheel but you must move the starter from original position upwards toward exhaust manifold to clear bulky Mercedes oil pan, and must make new cutout in bell housing to fit starter. (you can see pic of this on)
Read more: 87 jeep wrangler (617 coversion) - Diesel Bombers (Look at the last pic on the first thread and you will see that the starter was moved)

The engine is a OM617 turbo diesel 630lbs wet should be 123HP and 170ft*lbs

I would guess about the same as a straight 6. The 5.3vortec swaps usually get better milage, but an LS1 should get about the same. My dad's truck get's 12mpg with one, so I'd imagine putting one in a Jeep will get better numbers, but nowhere near as good as you would get with a diesel. If I had the money, I would be putting a 4BT in my Jeep. I saw one in a cj-8 in person, and it was sick.
