But if it is geared in the 4.10 area with a 4 to 1 transfer case ( trust me ) the rpm is gonna come up much quicker than in a stock cars gearing !!!!!!

here is a toyota with the mercedes engine with better gearing ..... by the way it is the RED one with the 38 inch tires ...... turn up the volume to hear the turbo whine at the end of the video !!

BUT ..... REMEMBER ....... I AM DOING THIS FOR A DAILY DRIVER TO GET 28ish Miles Per Gallon !!!! And maybe run a little BIODIESEL !!!
I hate to tell you this- but gearing is all about tire size. The MB comes stock w/ like 24" tires. You HAVE to run 4.10's in order to turn 33's. The actual final drive will probably be the same. The tires are why the gearings different.

So if you are having to make an adaper for the tranny why the switch to a dakota bell housing and not just use the one from the jeep?

too bad there wasnt a way to swap a newer 1.9L turbo diesel from a VW into the jeep. I have one that's chipped and bigger turbo with 200hp and 350ft/lb of tq. A jeep with that in it would be pretty stinkin awesome.

INdeed: 1,9 TDI is my personal everyday favorite.. Drove my company Golf III on a regular basis. From 1995 - 2008 it made 1.323.778 km. Then we decided to buy new cars

I'm sure there is. Guys put them in Samurais all the time. The 4 runner guys are all over them. http://www.jeep2diesel.org/

Not sure but...... Since the AX15 was made by Toyota...... Would a Toyota bell housing bolt to it???? You can get 1.9 VW to Toyota trannys.http://www.acmeadapters.com/store.php

Gearing is not all about tire size....although it may be in this case. there are many other factors that come into consideration.

Back in high school I had a 1977 MB 300D I bought for $900. It had 180,000 miles when I boguht it, and I gave it to my brother when I joined the Army, with 320,000 miles. He totalled it with 410,000 miles. I met a guy who had over 650,000 on his original engine. Those things are nearly bulletproof. Nice idea for a swap, I am subscribing to this post!

The ax-15 bellhousing was so narrow for it to line up with input shaft on trans and pilot in crank meant cutting a couple inches off the oil pan on the side ( not a good idea ) and that still left the starter in VERY close proximity to the Turbo's heat !!!

OK........OK...... TO HELP ALL YOU ENGINE AND TRANS SWAP GUYS I FOUND THIS SITE DURING THE MONTHS THAT I WAS DOING RESEARCH ......... IT IS PRETTY MUCH THE AUTHORITY ON TRANSMISSION SWAPS AND JUST PLAIN GREAT INFORMATION !!

When I am on the road it should have enough pep to keep up with traffic ..... but with the 4 to 1 transfer case in addition ..... when I am wheelin I should be able to spool up the turbo pretty quickly !! That is what the guy in the TOYOTA you tube video i posted a link to said anyways. I guess only time and a few thousand dollars will tell ........

I only want the outstanding fuel economy on the road from this !!!!!!

Hmmm..got me thinking here....
I just recently aquired a CHEEP 2001 F250 intercooled turbo diesel 7.3 4x4 with the hypertec programmer with a tore up body..wonder how THAT would run in the YJ?..or FIT for that matter..lol
All joking aside..can't wait to see the outcome of this one,i always see those turbo diesel MB's around here go for cheep with what they consider high mileage, but they dont really know how many miles can be had from them..lol

I can't wait for the results! I have always tossed around the idea of this swap. I love diesels, and I love the W123 mercedes. I hope it works out well!

A good reference for diesel swaps is 4btswaps.com. I am in the middle of a cummins 4bt coversion on my cj. The 4BT is the same engine as the 6BT put in the dodge trucks minus two cylinders. This means that any accessories that were in that dodge will bolt right up to the 4BT(ie, vaccum pump, power steering pump, etc.) A plus for this swap is the NV4500 transmission that will bolt right up to this. You just need one from a dodge diesel.

Also the 4bts were put in bread trucks with gm transmissions so you can buy the adapter and bolt a 700r4 or 4l80e to the 4 bt as well.
