Possibly a pipe dream but you can get a brand new one... a quality you'd be hard pressed to find in a Mercedes turbo diesel from the 80s. And it's got 173 horsepower instead of 129 (the most powerful OM602 you can get from the mid 90s) so it would be an impressive performer with very few further modifications.

It would be much cheaper I'm sure to use a Mercedes engine. But I'd honestly be willing to spend that little bit more for sheer uniqueness and a Toyota motor (but not brakes --->). If I did manage to pull it off... my baby would go from being unique to pretty much a one off... which I have dreamed of making it for years.
Just a rule of thumb ...... unique and " one-off " are usually common with "UBER EXPENSIVE !! "

And , since it is a european spec engine ....... I would imagine you are gonna have a real fun time finding parts if the need arises ; but , I could be wrong !!

Sounds like a blast chasing down necessary components to make it work though . Good luck with it !!

Ive been gone a couple of months and it is interesting to see were this has gone with alot of what ifs...

This is a great swap if you want a Jeep that has a little more performance than stock, gets great gas mileage, is a great conversation starter, and doesnt bust the budget. With 4.10's and an AX 15 on 33's, there is very little turbo lag and is very spunky, way better than the 4cyl it replaced and similar to a 6cyl. This thing is a blast to drive and it turns heads.

The more I drive my YJ, the more I like it. If you want more power, drop in a small block and replace the drive train. Its interesting to listen to people bench race this subject. Alot of talking, no doing...

This is a great swap!!! It's the one I'd go with if I didn't have a spare 4.0 sitting on an engine stand in the shop....

Thanks Guys !!

It was confusing how there could be over 430 posts and one person who had not even seen the swap in person or driven it , could just slam it like he had done it 100 times !!

There is a video on 4bt swaps of the Mercedes 3.0L diesel in a Toyota on 38.5 inch tires running 5.29 gears ; as I remember he was getting 7-8 with gas engine and 18.5 with Merc diesel !!

I will try to post a link to the video !!

Got it !!!! If you listen just after the 1 minute mark you can hear the engine spool up very quickly with just a blip of the throttle !!

Do anyone have writen plans or diagrams for the parts that need fabrication to put the 617 in a YJ? I have a 95 4banger YJ that needs an upgrade. My father gave me his old 85 MB 300D, the diesel idea seems fun.

im looking at buying a 98 jeep with an 1981 merc diesel, (my shopping cart (96 toyota rav4 with 127k miles) just exploded the engine and now I'm in the market) the guy has done the swap himself and says everything pretty much works (minus the a/c and the old computer sits there saying "WFT mate"). According to him, 2nd gear in the 5 speed is "a little rough," how concerned should i be about this? and how is this engine as a power plant. i love diesel, and the thought of having an engine that will never blow an O2 sensor sounds pretty good, but some feed back would be appreciated.

turbo diesel

I'm in the process of swapping my 4 cyl for a 5cyl turbo diesel from a 83 Mercedes, i have already made ne brackets and the engine is mounted, i was hoping to get some info on what radiator fan i could use since i have hardly any space between the engine and the radiator, I was thinking of an E fan from a Taurus or something like that but i wanted to know if there is anything I can fit towards the front of the radiator between the grille, any info or ideas will help, I'm probably going to a junk yard to look for one, hulkgreen are you done with yours? how is it going? thanks

Pep Boys and most other parts houses have electric fans.
I tried to put a taurus fan in my 4.2 but it was too fat so I ended up with one of the aftermarket ones. It doesn't move as much air but 3 summers now and some serious fall wheeling and it hasn't gotten over very warm. Plus I think they draw a lot less amps.

I am interested in seeing how this is going. I am the one from the beginning didn't think it was a good idea. I had a couple Mercedes diesel and one with the motor talked about. I drove it for over 100,000 miles and wouldn't use it for this type of vehicle. Had this topic come up earlier I could have made somebody a great deal on a donor vehicle.

I am curious to know what mileage has been achieved and from the performance side I read that is it is better than the 4 cyl but not as good as the six, and there is only slight turbo lag. I am also curious to know how much it is costing.

Hey buddy,

You can check ebay. I just picked up one ( ad said for a dodge ram diesel ) but I know the Ram has a thermostatic fan not electric) for $25 + $20 for shipping and it was brand new in a box , but the control box and relay were not included !! You can pick up the control box from any parts store for about $15 !! I installed it on my Diesel Dixie Chopper lawn mower ( the dealer wanted $200 for theirs ) and have not had any trouble with it ; I run it 4 to 5 hours every week for at least 6 weeks !! It looks unbelievably similar to my Hayden electric fan I installed into my Jeep that cost over $100 from Summit Racing !!

The 1984 Mercedes I robbed the engine from had a slim electric pusher fan installed infront of the radiator. So, I robbed the fan and installed it in front of my radiator with minimal fab work. So if you don't have the donor car you can check pull a part and find one for under $ 20.

I have an 4.0 HO engine now on LPG fuel but thinking over and over (and over) about swapping it with mercedes diesel.. OM648, 3.2L straight six with 202 HP or something,.

But the main question is --- how would it cope with TF999 3.speed auto?

Hello,

I see you are from Croatia , welcome to the thread !!

If the horsepower and torque numbers of your OM 648 are in proportion to the OM 617 , read that as NOT a HUGE torque monster , I would think you would not have any problem with that motor , that is IF you can adapt it to that automatic transmission !!
