I have an 87 300D turbo. It is a 3.0 6cyl. and the factory spec is 145 HP and 195 ft/lbs. Since these older mercedes are mechanical injection, it is fairly easy to adjust fuel flow and with an adjustable dump valve you can adjust boost pressure as well. If you want to burn a little more fuel, you can easily up the power output.
I have owned the car for the last 12 years and my son now drives it to high school. It has close to 300k on it and still runs strong.
Certainly a turbocharged engine offers a whole lot of room for easy tuning and gaining a few more ponies by increasing fuel and boost, as long as you stay within the limits so nothing blows, it works perfect!

I was unaware of numbers for the 4 cylinder engine, I can see this thread becoming a monster thread!

My dad had one that I always drove around. Before it was really slow until the turb kicked in, but after, the car hauled ***. So I'm sure there's more that can be done to up the power.

Wikipedia shows it at 125 horse and 190 with the turbo charger and I intend to INTERCOOL IT !! Should help quite a bit ..... BUT I am only wantin it for 25 + MPG and making my own fuel ( possibly ) !!

I will probably not bump/BOMB it more than that as I have heard it shortens the life ( 700,000 miles is pretty much FOREVER !! )

I don't know man, seems like a lot of work to me for a minor power upgrade from the 4cyl. From the 4.0 it would be a downgrade. Also- I don't know where you got your info on the 4BT but it is wrong.

First you don't need to fab a PS bracket or any bracket- the jeep lines go right to the stock pump. In fact the cummins pump is stronger than the jeep pump by a lot- plus you never have to worry about loosing a belt since it's a direct drive. And most earlier motors- Pre- 96 have a vacuum pump- they didn't go to hydroboost till then.
On my swap I went with the 6BT because stock they make 200 horses and 400ft. lbs. of torque- They average 750,000 miles and have been known to get 1,000,000 with frequent maintenance and care. Also the Bosch VE pumps can be tuned just by adjusting the pump and can make 300 HP/ 600 FP no problem.

But hey- whatever floats your boat- wish you luck. Looks like a good project.

I had a 1984 300SD with that motor. That motor would SUCK in a jeep.

It has NO power until you get the RPMs up. I could never imagine trying to crawl over anything other that a speed bump with it.

Once the turbo kicks in the power is better but until then you have just barely enough to get the vehicle moving.

DON'T DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My Mercedes did get close to 30 mpg and had close to half a million miles on the whole vehicle and about 30k on the rebuit motor. It wasn't any louder than many gas engines. It ran GREAT but the lack of power at low rpms would not mix well if you use your jeep off-road.

Even if you geared it down, once the turbo quicked in the power jump would be hard to perdict and adjust for.

ROSS,

I own a 1982 W123 and it is quite respectable in terms of acceleration and speed. I am not sure about your experience but this motor was used in GWAGEN's around the world and they run just fine off and on-road. This is a very reliable motor that has tons of pep. There was probably something wrong with your vacuum system.

Ross, man... that's just brutal!

I think this is one of the neatest ideas I've seen on JF. Agree that the Cummins is a bad fit for a jeep, way too heavy.

My vote for coolest engine projects (as if anyone cares): custom diesel install like this, 5.0 ford, 4.7 stroker build

Holy ****, I thought that was just a typing error, and you were just putting a 4bt into a Jeep, the 6bt is going to be sweet. I can't wait to see the build.
