$20 bucks for doner yj! Please read

Well, I live in winter springs Fl. I have perfect timing, new fuel pump, 2 fuel pressure regulators, 2 map sensors, new fuel filter, lines and wires cap rotor plugs, pick up coil and 150 on each cylendar. My 2.5 starts right up and idles fine. As soon as I hit the gas it breaks up and back fires like mad not letting me get over 1700 rpm. This started on a 7 hr trail ride three and a half hrs from home. 15 mph the entire way home. Anyways, the only thing I can think of is the computer is going bad. Before I spend 300 more on the computer I just figured I'd ask my wheeling buddies here on the forum. I need someone that would be willing to meet me at the shop where the jeep is and let me unclip the computer from you're yj and plug it in mine so I can narrow out weither or not it's the cpu. It's obd1 there is no codes to be thrown. The only thing I get from turn key engine light is that the factory a.c. relay is bad, I know this the factory a.c. has been replaced with a new kit from jeepair.com a few months back so I know that has nothing to do with it. No cat and I'm on my third muffler (the back firing was killing them) so thats where I'm at. Well beyone my cool at this point with my jeep. I'll pay $20 bucks for the use it's real quick to disco the c.p.u. I only need it for like 10 min and you can watch at the shop with the mechanic doing it.

you should replace the ignition control mod .i think its on the firewall with a black cover over it.When they fail some will cause random shutdown and no start ,some will cause rough running and stall at rpm's over 1200 .I have experienced it myself.Hard to trouble shoot and will show no codes at times.Testing it is not all ways reliable since it will be random failure at different rpm's just a thought .

I'd offer mine for free if I lived anywhere near you! I live down in MIA. Good luck, though.

This sounds an awful lot like a bad coil. There should be a test procedure floating around somewhere that tells you to how to check the coils with a multimeter.

I've got a 2.5 PCM in the garge somewhere for a 4cyl auto from my 94. Id also sell it cheap since I did a 4.0
Swap and don't plan to ever need it again.

Sounds like bad or grounding coil

Sounds like you have a bad coil or wiring. Will cause back firing. also check distributor pick up.

If you are backfiring and not just missing then you have a timing issue. You replaced the coil I would check the distributor and see if the bearings are shot ot there is too much play in the chain.

Well I just got home with my Yj and the mechanic warrantied out the new fuel pump he put in. Said the pressure was 28lbs at idle not 31. I think thats really close but the thing runs great. I am going to replace the coil and everything else and buy a cpu somewhere in case. I don't need to see by error again on my part if I forget to do something and have it fail on a trail ride again on me. I did reply to parts for sale guys let me know if you are still willing to sell them. Thanks a bunch! Mike
