2.5 wants to start but stalls!!
Hey guys. New to the world of jeep. just bought a yj on criagslist at a steal. My odometer wasnt working so i did so research and found it there was a plug on the transfer case that some times gets dirty. so i pulled the plug and cleaned it with some contact cleaner. didnt work. pulled the whole gear and all to check it wan looked great. put it back and it didnt want to start. used a test light to check to see if it was getting power and heard what sounded like the fuel pump kick on. prior to all this it ran great. pulled the plug on the transfer case and it started up again put the plug back on and it still ran fine. later that night i started it up and it ran for a couple of min and stalled but started back up. drove it about a mile home and stalled and wouldnt start again. checked the fuel rail and am getting fuel and hear the pump kick on. im trying to figure out if maybe i blew a sensor or the ecm ecu. any ideas.
Thanks Dom 92 YJ

Sounds like you need to run the codes test: OBDI Error/Check Engine Codes - JeepForum.com Community Jeep Wiki

See if you can get any codes out of it. Just turn the key On-Off, On-off, On. Count the flashes and see what happens.

This sounds like a case of a bad ASD relay (Auto Shut Down relay) located in the PDC. Usually, a bad ASD will cause it to start, then immediately stall. It's a standard 5-prong relay.
PDC - Power Distribution Center ![]() Relays - The ASD relay is the center black relay in my '91 PDC. Refer to the diagram under the lid to make sure you know which one is the ASD on your YJ. ![]() Max ![]()

Thank you all for your help but it seems that the major problem was very minor and dumb. i checked to see if i was getting good spark and it was intermittent. so i then checked the plug for the coil which has the little lock broken off. pulled it out then pushed it in and wal la it works find. gonna find a rubber band to hole it in better. why is it the stupid little things that piss ya off the most lol.

#12 just means that the battery was disconnected sometime within the last 50 starts. Nothing to worry about and is a normal code to have stored. It does not cause the CEL lamp to light. Glad to here you got it fixed!
Also, your '92 does not have an EGR system. It has a CCV (Crank Case Ventilation) which relies on a three-way catalytic convertor to knock down the NOx emissions. |
