2.5 auto starter removal

Starter went out this morning. I unbolted it and disconnected it but it won't come out. What do I have to do to get it out??? I t seems that the oil pan is in the way. Starters used to be easy as pie, take the two bolts out and it should drop out. Is my sliding gear stuck forward or am I just a little stupid this morning.
Thanks, Bernie

I've had that problem i the past. I believe I used a rubber mallet to help remove it. Since you are going to replace it, you might use a more substantial hammer (BFH).

Hey guys thanks for your responses. I beat that starter out with a Big A** hammer and cro-bar. I fixed it and ran to work about 4 hrs. late. It turns out the hammer worked good. Seems that the outer casting of the starter in front where the gear slides was made too big. It was hung up there and scraped away the oversized casting. What a sledge and a small cro-bar can do. Turns out there is 2 different starters for a 2.5 auto in '94 . It depends on when your jeep was built. There is a pre-may "94 and an after may '94. The pre-may is shorter and has a different front nose-cone( not as long), Of course I had to find that out the hard way with 2 trips to the parts store. All in all a twenty miniute job turned into a couple hours but it's done and I'm rolling again. This is when I really mis my old stick. Thanks again for your responses.

Bernie

I didn't forget it but put it in crooked the first time and had a nice ticking from it rubbing on the flywheel.
