^^ What ever...
It ain't a go fast machine - it does get the job done and then some...
I have towed, crawled, climbed and passed more than I ever thought a 4banger was capable of...
To each his own ~ they are all Jeeps !!

I think it more so depends on the person to whether or not it's unerpowered, to some people, it's adequate.
what happened to jeepfreak81 is not the 4banger's fault, it was that a-hole who hit him. People like that should lose their license and never be allowed to touch a car again, it's that simple.
The only time I've ever actually wanted more power was when driving to moab. The higher elevation sucked what little power the 4 banger had and REALLY made it gutless on the highway, we were lucky to actually accelerate on flat ground, but here in Houston where the elevation is lower, it makes enough power for the highway, I never have trouble passing or keeping up with traffic (though I am on just 30s)

Highway, yea it needs more power
Trail/town etc... its more than enough.
It'll probably get swapped for a GM 4.3 TBI when she dies, but until then i'm keeping it. Its a reliable engine that runs well, starts EVERY time, and will keep up with anything on the trail when setup properly. (even the I6 needs gears if you're going big...)
My plans to make it better only include a 4:1 Transfer case and some 4.88's when I go to 35's.
You want power? get a v8.

Well said punisher. I think I will scrap the I6 I have in the garage and actually keep the good old reliable 2.5 and get some new gears in th eJeep. After all it will be a weekend toy to run around topless on 35" around town and the ocassional trail here and there with nothing extreme. God Bless America and God Bless the 4 Angry Squirrels. Good night and God Bless.

I like my 4cyl. The best part is all the extra elbow room in the engine bay. I'd like to have a 4.0 or even a nice chevy 305 but heck, I'm already half way there, right? And that's not too bad. There just so many other things on the Jeep to worry about right now, thankfully the engine isn't one of them. 2.5L is just fine. Run it 'til it dies, drop in another, repeat until you die.

I've had a 4 cylinder YJ (1995) and 2 2.5L TJs (1997 & 2001). I now have a 4.0L Rubicon that doesn't feel much more powerful around town than any of my 4 bangers... could be a case of the Rubi weighing a lot more than the SE's though.
The 2.5L was great putting around but on the highway, you're doomed. As for the 4.0L, I drove my Rubicon from Ontario to British Columbia (about 4200 kilometers) hauling a 4x8 enclosed trailer and it never felt underpowered, even through the Rockies. The I-6 has really long legs.

VERY true, but I choose to blame the motor, good excuse to upgrade, and now I have the power to get out of the way and compensate for them. I set the new V8 high in the engine bay, and even where I have it the COG is still lower then I had before, it also helps I run a smaller lift and trim to fit my tires. Though very good for most of the trails I run, it is very bad for rocks, that thankfully we don't have a lot of around here.

Thank you everyone for the input, I do really appreciate it. All I have to do know is get rid of the I6 sitting in my garage and keep running the 2.5. It is amazing as to the different opinions everyone threw out there, but it did for a great conversation. Keep on Jeepin!

Multi-port injected 4 bangers will blow the throttle body injected ones out of the water...
my jeep has 36's with 4.88's and TBI
my buddies jeep has 35s with 4.10s and MPI.... he blows me out of the water on any hill, but i could beat him off the line... for about 20 feet

I like this thread. I have a 4.0 and a AW4 sitting ready to go in and haven't been able to get off the fence and put it in. The only places I've found myself wishing I had more power was trying to climb sand hills without room to run at them and on the highway. I have 4.88s and an 8.8 to go in and I'm guessing that will help the highway performance a bit.
A friend of mine has a Klune V in his XJ and after how those things work I am thinking about leaving the 2.5 in and moving it forward enough to instll an AX15 and a Klune V.

I'm proud of my four little squirlies
When the Jeep still belonged to my father he used it to pull out our Silverado 2500HD and our 34 ft. 5th wheel out of the mud, I was easing on the gas in the pickup and the Jeep pulled it right out!
About 4 weeks ago I pulled out my friends 94 YJ with 35's AND his dad's Dodge pickup. My buddy got the left side of his Jeep stuck in the mud and when his dad tried to yank him out it only dug his truck deep into the mud too. My little angry squirrles pulled him out no problem.
I made the 6.5 hour drive to my sisters house in OR for Christmas, cruised 75 no problem. Windy as hell but it was sure smooth! Even hitting the grades going into Shasta and Grants Pass I could easily hold 65+ if I went down to 4th
Bottom line: I like my 4 banger. But I'll probably swap it in a year or two

i have a 94 YJ 4 banger with 170k miles and its been alwsome. some people say i drive to slow but i tell them i get over 18 to the gallon around 20 on flat highway. plus i didnt build it to go fast i built it for off-road its got 8.5 inch suspension with MSD inginition coil with wires and plugs, a header dualed out on either side with a glasspack, throttlebody spacer and air intake. i run 35s on the stock 4.10 gears. the best about is when i power brake for them when they laugh at my 4 banger, it raises some eyebrows.

I love my 4 cyl. Does what I need it to. A 4.0 would be nice, but I'll never need V8 power. To all the non-believers: The willys MB that won the war had a 4 banger with like half the HP of ours. Good enough for me.

I can take my 4 banger to 75 on the freeway and probably faster, but I don't push it as it is old.
It is my daily driver and more...lol..I ride it up and down the Hollywood Hills including Laurel Canyon Blvd and I almost flipped over on Laurel Canyon as I hit a bump on a nasty curve...lol...nasty for my Jeep anyways.
It has 288000+ miles on it and will soon hit 300,000 at the rate I am going. I'm finally going to replace the stock belt fan with an electric cooling fan, and do other mods to keep it cool...lol.
It goes fast cause I am not a chubby guy, I have no rear seat and no spare tire hanging off the back. All I have are two seats and an that is all.
To be able to run fast, don't make your jeep a storage compartment and the 2.5L engine should be fine. However, when I have to go up hills, I have to pull to the side and let the cars behind me pass...lol....it is a 4 banger after all..
Edit: don't put too much gas in the tank either as it will weigh you down.lol...run on empty to go faster.lol....
