I shall throw in my 2 cents. With a decent 2.5 and 4.88's you will be fine as a DD. You def not gonna love the love the gas mileage but I have been running 35/12.50/15 mickey Thompson baja claw ttc radials for quite some time now with 4.88's. I can see 75-80 miles an hour no problem.


This is also with a 95 2.5 with 80k miles. It's not speed demon by any means. On that note I should tell you that I'm upgrading to 5.3 vortec with a NV3550, don't let that discourage you though. This setup will work perfectly fine, for sure get you an 8.8 and gear upgrade.

Mine's a work in progress, as I said. I don't do highways luckily, so the slower top end doesn't concern me.

After the LQ4/9, it'll be just fine.

Though, depending on how many more terms the president gets, I may be looking at a diesel.

I agree with you. I've had 35s on my 2.5 for 10 years...it's fine.

Ive run the AX-5 on my rig for at least 10years as well. I wheel pretty hard. I also daily drove the rig for 6+ years. Are there better transmissions yes, but its not the grenade some would have you believe. Ive killed a coulple 9" Fords, some chromo shafts on the 30, a TC case, but never had the first trouble with the AX-5. Also could cruise 60 to 65 all day every day with the 2.5 and 4.56 gears.. It got the job done. No rocket, but it did its job. Offroad it is a non issue. will go anywhere any other similarly equipped Jeep will go. Period.
