2.5 and 35's should I even bother?

Hi i have been a reader for several months. This is my first time posting. I was wondering I have a 2.5 litre 4 banger and i would like to upgrade to 35's with a ford 8.8 rear. Would the engine have enough power to push 35's. its mainly my dd but id like it to be capable off road. A friend who restores vintage cars told me to add an intake, exaust, tb spacer and an electric rad fan and my hp should be comparable to a stock i6. Or should i just throw on some 33's and call it quits.

The upgrades you listed will not get you anywhere near the 4.0's power, sorry. That said, the 2.5L is more than capable offroad and can be made to be a very reliable DD as well.

The difference between 33's and 35's as far as offroad performance is very minimal. The extra inch of clearance can be had in other ways (higher clearance skids, etc) with the only place you'll really see the difference is at the axle housing. Rough hack but I'd venture that 95% of people who wheel their Jeeps recreationally really have no need for anything above 33's, especially if you're not into any sort of moderate->agressive rock crawling or really heavy mud drags.

For a dual use rig, I think an 8.8 rear regeared front and rear to 4.88's and 33's will be great for you. Down the road adding some selectable lockers and high clearance skids will make you FAR more capable than the guy who slapped some 35's on with a t-case drop and 4" RC springs.

Hopefully you are trolling because no way would you make the AX 5 hold up and with 35's with even a good gear you wouldn't be able to get above 50 mph. In a single word..... No

I run the following:

36 Iroks
D44 Front Locked/Ford 8.8 Rear Spooled
Flat Springs-- No lift
Reverse Shackle
4.56s
Extended wheel wells/High Fenders

Your biggest limiting factor with 35's is going to be your gears. If you have stock gears its not worth it. If you upgrade to atleast 4.56's...preferably 4.88s youll be fine.

I'm going to disagree with what others are telling you here by sharing my own experience, a good running 2.5 with proper gears should be alright with 35s.

I have a fresh 2.5 that is well maintained and I currently run 35" tires with 4.88 gears. Even 33's are bad with 4.10 gears and I would prefer a little higher than 5.13 but 4.88 is great. I can hit 80+mph without wind.

It isn't great as a commuter car. My gas mileage has never been good even with 31s and 4.10 gears.

My AX5 has been holding up too. I change the oil in it every other time I change the engine oil.

I have even run 37" tires with my 2.5 liter at times. 37's are really pushing it I admit.

I made the trip from OKC to Bridgeport, Texas last month. I cruised at ~80mph there and 65mph back. It was around 380 miles round trip. (I even wheeled some wet class 3 and 5 stuff)

Take care of your engine, don't add stuff that de-tunes it and get proper gears. You'll be fine.

You can DD on 35's with the 4 banger fine with 4.88 gears $expensive$ and a 8.8 just don't expect to have a race car... As for the engine upgrades do not get a throttle body spacer they do not help. what you want to do is pull a throttle body from a 4.0 it will bolt right up and allow more airflow, due to being larger in diameter. But like Que said earlier the ax5 transmission wont last too long so be ready to replace it with a ax15 $expensive$ a few weeks later...

It's mainly a DD then I still say no bigger then a 33 even with a regear unless you steep into one of the tall regear options. Most 8.8 came with the 3.07. If you are lucky you can find a 4.10 but it still not tall enough to run 35's on a DD and be able to get to freeway speed. That means you will need to regear both axles and swap out the ax 5 for an ax 15. I am running 32's on the stock axles with 410's and it is enough to push 60 and find 5th on a good downhill run. For a DD unless you are going to do the work stay below a 33 with 4.10. The are plenty of little things like you said to get a little more out of the 2.5L. The 8.8 is a good idea(I want one for mine) as are the mods. You don't need 35's to have a capable offroad Jeep. 2" on the tires will give you a little more but sway bar disconnects and 33's will get you more articulation and through most of the stuff and when it doesn't that is what a winch is for.

Before I put the v8 under the hood I had 35's and the 2.5. Also I still had the factory 4.10 gears. It wasn't as bad as people make it out to be. Yes I could go over 50mph but I didn't use 5th gear much. It wasnt the best for a dd but for running around it was fine. Also my ax5 had 270k on it. People go off of what they read on here without actually running the setup.

BINGO. Sorry I had to call out some of these guys but it just isn't true that the AX5 will immediately fall apart or the jeep will be undrivable. If you take care of your stuff it works. My AX5 hasn't broken in the 15 years I've had it and I keep it freshly oiled. My 4 banger (with 4.88 gears) will get me around just as good as it would with 31" tires and 4.10s.

I'm pushing a wee bit over a stock six power wise with my set up
4.88s
33s
and a bored over 2.5l with an e fan 3 core rad and an inertia ring. I can cruse 80 with no issues most days

My 2.5l '94 on 35s with an 8.8 (4.10) and AX5 DD.




I play off road too, when I'm home.




There is a LQ4 or 9 and 4L60E in the near future (which is why I'm not changing the gearing). But I don't have any issues... I'm not winning races, but I don't care about that either.

I dd my jeep and beat the piss out of it off road with 4.88 locked f&r and has no issue what so ever. I have plenty of power and cruise 70-75 with traffic on then freeway with ease......and as far as the ax5 goes it has held up great to my power thus far with out even flinching! Keep in Mind this is all first hand experience!

Would it be possible for you to find another Jeep owner close by with 35s and a 2.5L and do a test drive? We all have different expectations for performance, and driving it first hand would give you a great deal of confidence before you spend a lot of money.

My comments - even though there are some success stories, I personally wouldn't put 35s on my 2.5/AX5. I just think you are asking too much from the components.

Can it work for some people? Absolutely.

Will it work for you? Who knows? Will you be lucky or unlucky? Was your Jeep as well maintained as the others that have been successful?

If I ever wanted 35s, I would either do a full motor/transmission/TC/Front Axle/Rear Axle or I would just buy another Jeep. Actually, I'm pretty sure that I would buy another Jeep! Just starting out with a stronger motor/transmission/TC would make things much easier. Then find a Dana30 with 4.10s for the front and a 4.10 8.8 for the rear, and you are set. No extra cost for gear changes. A TJ Rubicon would make a great starting platform, as well.
