1995 YJ wont start :(

Have a 6 cyl. Just redid all the fuel hoses and put in a new fuel filter. She started up and ran perfect yesterday and this morning. When I was about to leave work I tried starting and she just wouldn't turn over. Maybe I should have done the fuel pump too lol ? Only thing that gets me is when I have my buddy turn the key to the on position I hear the fuel pump spool up underneath. Any ideas ? Thanks guys.

So your starter is not turning over? Tap the starter with a hammer and see if it's frozen in place. Check battery voltage, too. It could be random but you want to make sure nothing is causal in this relationship, as well.

Oops sry wrong wording. Yes it turns over. Just won't start. I just added a brand new battery when I did the fuel hoses too

go to autozone and borrow the fuel pressure gauge. It is free, you just have to leave them a deposit. Plug it into the shrader valve on the fuel rail and give us the pressure with the key in the ON position.

You may also consider doing all of the basic tune up items if you haven't done so recently: Champion copper core spark plugs, plug wires, distributor cap, air filter.

Ensure that your fuel filter was installed in the correct direction, it is easy to get it backwards.

Does the check engine light come on when you turn the key to the ON position?

Just kicking myself in the butt because I had the tank down to redo the fuel hoses. I said ehhh don't fix what's not broken. But like you recommended I'm going to eliminate the other potential problems first before I drop the tank again.

I may also try to replace my coolant temperature sensor.

Changed the coolant temp sensor. That's not it. I did the crank position sensor and also a new idle control valve about 4,000 miles ago as well

Could you read the error codes out of the computer for us?

Can you tell if you are getting spark?

Have you tried removing the air filter (or hose to the throttle body) and spraying a bit of starting fluid in to see if it sputters (or runs)?

definitely get the fuel pressure numbers for us. Correct pressure so important for fuel injection. If you have correct fuel pressure with the key in the ON position, then you should check voltage at your fuel injectors.

Cool looking jeep BTW! Not my style, but that's the beauty of wranglers, everyone gets their own look!

I had this same issue on my 4 banger. The pump was running, we even replaced it, and it still wouldnt run but would turn over. Check the relays and pcm, I believe my auto shutdown relay was bad. I replaced it and the pcm (shorted out from an O2 sensor short) and it turned over fine.

if you aren't getting any/little pressure at the rail, its possible you accidentally installed the filter on backwards. you would be able to run the engine for a few mins with just the reserve fuel in the line, . just a thought. let us know.

Thanks guys. Friday night I'm going to try all of these things. I appreciate the help. One question - if she doesn't start and I try to test the fuel pressure. Will the gauge register being its not running ? I did find one issue last night. My alternator is a higher amp out of a Cherokee and because of that I ran a separate wire to the battery with an inline 100 amp fuse. I noticed the one end was melted pretty bad and had some exposed wiring. Going to change that all out first and see jf it makes a different

With the key in the ON position, you should hear the pump turn on for up to 3 seconds. After that, you should read 31 psi at the fuel rail. If not, you will have a lot of trouble starting it.

Get your in line fuse situation taken care of. It may not be the problem you were looking for, but it is a problem!
