1992 yj bad belt squeal

My jeep squeals really bad on start up and my alt is drawing power really bad and every time I turn on my signals my voltage gage flikers. And it also looks like my harmonic balancer is pushed outward a little bit. So my belt tends to slide back tward the timing cover

Cause he has no idea how to fix it. I would make sure the pulley is in alignment and have the alternator checked out.

Sounds to me like the harmonic balancer wasn't installed properly. I replaced mine several weeks ago & then had to remove it to replace the timing chain. Take the bolt out and use a dead blow hammer to ensure the balancer is fully seated then torque to specs (80 ft/lbs).

Take alternator off & have checked. Mine would fluctuate at low RPMs....replaced and all is good.

As far as your belt squeal......put a breaker bar on the tensioner (i.e. alternator bracket) & tighten it up. Belt should only flex about 1/4"......mine did the same and I read where folks were going to gator backs, soaping it up, etc, etc.....tightened it up and all quiet.

Good luck!

Over 200 threads with the keywords "belt squeal" in them. Took .12 seconds to find and load.

If you teach a man to search....

I had a bad squeal for the longest time and after going through a few different belts I changed the harmonic balancer and it helped but still wasn't perfect. I tried the goodyear gatorback and it hasn't made any noise for 5000 mi.

Besides double checking the harmonic balancer, you could have a worn idler pully... Jeep isn't exactly young anymore.

FWIW, had to fix both on my junk many moons ago... no problems since.

Iv tightened and lossened the belt so many times. Iv put a gates belt on it twice and the gatorback belt made it ten times worse my power steering started squealing and I also tried a groved idler pully and same result every time squeals on start up and every time I rev it I'm gonna try an alt now

So why didn't you do that in the first place?

not sure which 4.0 you have... but my tensioner is on the Power Steering pump... (idley pully if no power steering)

jeez man, yeah try a new alt, maybe check the routing too? (sounds dumb I know... but I've gotten it wrong on mine!)

Have someone else start it while you watch, maybe you can figure out which pully is squealin'

Goodluck!

man, that sucks. i know mine squeals on start up too and i have changed everything and adjusted it to no avail. its worse now that i fixed my ac again. maybe you have a wrong pulley on something? i know mine is always going to have trouble since its all parts from different years and is a huuugggeee pain in the butt to change the belt.
