1992 Timing Problem?

I have a 2.5L and I decided to check the timing today because of some idle and fuel mixture problmes I've been having. When I checked it it was way off the map. I know there is no way to manually adjust the timing because it is controlled by the computer. What would cause the timing to be so far off?

Also, what does the computer do to the motor to change the timing? Thanks in advance.

...to be more specific, the timing is very much advanced at idle speed. I've heard things like the camshaft position sensor and the AIS motor could be the root of the problem, although the computer isn't showing any faults related to those things. Another question I had is if the cam sensor isn't working, can I adjust the timing the old fashion way by turning the distributer for a quick fix?
