1990 YJ Project
Hello all,
I am new here and have a few questions about my 1990 YJ 2.5L. I bought this about three weeks ago as a project Jeep. I am having a few issues that I have not seen before. They are as follows: 1. When I got the YJ it would not run. I replaced the fuel pump and relay and have it running now (poorly but running). The TBI has been changed to a carb (not sure if the carb is right for the engine) with a manual choke. The engine seems to lose power at about 55-60 MPH. What could the cause(s) be? 2. I was told by the past owner that the engine was pushing oil out of the dip stick tube. When I looked at the stick I realized it was not the right one. After buying the correct stick I found the oil striking the stick three inches above the full make (about 7 qts, not the 4 required for the engine). I changed the oil to correct this. However, it is still pushing a small amount of oil out of the tube. What can cause this? Will I need to rebuild or replace the engine? Thanks in advance to those who choose to assist me, Captncst

sorry cap I don't have any helpfull advice but just wanted to say welcome to the club. Get yourself a 12 inch adjustable wrench so you can bash the heck out of something when your jeep frustrates you.

check your PCV valve. it might be clogged and not allowing the motor to vent

I had oil coming out of my dipstick tube when I got mine also. I tried several things but it just turned out to be some of my vacuum hoses were rotted/clogged. So I replaced pretty much all of them and that fixed it. You especially will want the check the ones around the airbox and the ones coming off of the valve cover.

Lines
Well it would seem that this Jeep has been worked on by people that are worse at it than I am. All of the lines are either missing or have screws pluging them I will chase them out and get them rerouted and connected. Will see if that corrects it.
Also, any information on the carb question? It looks like a single barrel carter. I do not think it is made for the intake. There is a plate bolted over one side to cover what looks like one half of the intake. By the way thanks for the welcome!!!!!!!!! |

wow sounds like you had an A$$ working on that thing! who the hell would replace TBI with a carb!?!?! that doesn't even make any sense, but maybe it's just me
. how much did you pay for it? hopefully no more than $1k. personally to potentially save you time and money, go buy the factory TBI. that's the ONLY way to properly make it run the way it should. good luck to you though and welcome to the money pit! |

Hi Cap, and welcome to the world of YJ. As far as the dip stick I would recommend that you do a oil change with the amount stated in your manual then mark yur dipstick with a file for future refernace. Ignore the misspelled words, rule one.
Then give your motor a complete tune up. If you have to replace the motor you can still use the parts for the new one. That would be my start. If you have a catalic converter that will stop your top end speed listen for rattling in there. |

To those who have left posts
Thanks everyone. I now have a better place to start.
i have less than 1300 in her so far and that is with new seats, top, carpet, and some engine parts. I am going to replace the vac lines today to see how that works. As for the carb vs TBI. Where is the best place to get a new one (carb or TBI system)? or, should I just look for a engine that is complete and start there? as always, thanks in advance for thoses who post. it helps a lot.
