1990 jeep project, help?

Okay. I recently bought a 1990 jeep wrangler, it's had a few problems so far. i.e. I had to replace the carb due to an idling issue and i also had to zip tie my vaccume to the locker motor so my 4wd would actually work. all that said and done i have a pretty decent jeep. its the 1990 yj model with the 4.2 engine its stock. so here is my question, with the love of off roading in my veins i need help. what should i do to my jeep to help it preform better in an off roading situation. for lack of better words, help me "pimp" my ride. oh and im on kind of a tight budget, so i need to know what improvements to make first then so on and so on

I think one of the best mods you can do is Herculining the tub. Carpet sucks.

You can buy a $100 kit and have enough to do 2 jeeps, so it is good to split it with a friend if you can.

It's all in the prep work ... but you can get a $300 "spray in" type job for like $50 if you do it right. Wash the carpet and put it back in if you want.

comparable yes. same thing no. mine worked out great and loving every moment so i did herculine it.

and if you can afford it, a small lift or lockers is what most people will recommend, depending on your situation.

Well, you may have 4wd right now, but if one wheel gets stuck the other wheel will take all the power and the stuck wont spin at all. This is an open differential which is in most wranglers.

What a locker does is it replaces the open carrier inside the axle, to distribute the power to both wheels equally so more matter what both wheels turn the same speed. To have this done to both axles is extremely beneficial

And remember to much research on something like this can never hurt. Btw, you should click on UserCP and edit your profile with your yj's specs.

I have a 1990 4.2. This is the order I did some things to it

1) MC2100 carb. (the single best mod I have done to it)

2) Posi-Loc for the front axle

3) 31" tires

4) Mean Green Alternator

5) KC's and Hella's

6) Yellow top Optima

7) 4:10 8.8 w/disc and posi (if I ever get the time to put it in)

8) new shocks all around

Have you replaced your rear main seal yet?

Enjoy....They are great Jeeps

same 1990 YJ almost identical, first thing is get rid of the carter, which by the sounds of it you did, get it running good that is first and formost, no snese going on the trail and stalling out....

I went the weber way, the MC2100 is easier to tune but no offence by the sound of it you will get someone to do this for you, the install is not hard, I did mine and I knew NOTHING about carbs at the time, these guys one here will walk you thru it....awsome site...

2...THE posi lok......best mod to date for me, gie you 4x4 ALL the time, and gets rid of the stupid vacuum setup that is stock and replaces it with a manual pull cable, the best advantage to this setup is tehfact you can off road using 2WD lo range....

3...new Altenator, plugs, wires, coil, fuel filter, fuel pump, and nuttered it....this sounds expensive but really its not....the pump is manual on ths side of the block, and is like 50 bucks, 2 screws and its changed....the wires and coil and dist say around 350 maybe, and the nutter do it yourself, just search on it....

4..I went different here, I cut my fenders as opposed to lift, I had rust issues, this year its get spring over.....

I run 33 TSL swampers on stock gear right now and no lockers, and I go anywhere I need to go....
