1987 YJ Speedometer and Cable Question
I am currently fixing my speedometer. First I removed the speedometer, then the cable. The cable is broken, simple fix... well I ordered the cable, it looks
like many I have seen on the internet.
New Cable:
Back of Speedo:
What I don't understand is why all the cables seem threaded but the back of the speedometer has no threads. I am thinking my cable is correct but the speedometer is missing an insert that fits over the back?
The person that had the jeep before me had the cable zip-tied to the speedo to make it fit. The old cable and new one I ordered look identical.
Has anyone removed a 1987 speedometer and do you remember what the back looks like?
Front :
Thanks,
D

deshl,
I just went through that. I also have a 1987. That picture you have is not the correct cable. I did the same thing and ordered 3 different cables before I ordered the correct one from RockAuto.com
The cable will have the nut for screwing it onto the transfer case, but then the end that goes to the speedometer cable is plastic and snaps on to the back of the speedometer cable, so you are not missing anything it is just the wrong cable. It is the Dorman part# 03269 from that website. It will work, that is the one I ordered.

I just ordered this cable. How does the old cable come off? I tried prying it, I tried pinching the sides of the plastic connector. Am I not using enough force or is there a trick to it?

10 minutes and the new cable was on. The grommet at the firewall doesn't seem to be for the same size hole that was originally there, but that is a minor issue, that someday I may work to get to fit, but for now, more pressing matters are in play. Thanks for all in this matter.

Not sure which one u ended up getting. I ordered PN CRO53005084 from 4wd.com and it was the right one for my 88, which has the same white clip-on-to-the-back-of-the-speedo thingy.
Of course, I was stupid when installing and screwed up the cable. DO NOT try to put on the t-case with the gear in. Remove the housing, gear, then install cable, reinstall gear. Nothing like waiting a week to get the part only to bind it up in 5 seconds.

Digging up old posts here but, I broke my cable taking the dash off to install new speakers. I just wanted to see if anyone has gotten a spedo cable from a local parts store? Mine is the one with the plastic snap on piece too. I would hate to order this from online only to receive the wrong part.
It doesnt look like Dorman sells the cable anymore.

If I remember right, no, you don't need to remove the whole dash, just the plastic gauge housing for the tach and speedo.

No speedo cable for a TJ. It's the speed sensor on the side of the case.
