as much as i wanted to get my hands on a 2015 diesel WK2 i think i'm just going to stay put with my '10. i'm still holding out hope that the XJ will be released with a diesel in the near future. maybe i'm just being naive though...

Yes. You will never, ever see a new XJ from Jeep ever again.

BOY!!!

Do I miss my CJ-8...!!!!!

I wonder if they built one today, would it sell, or would it have to be so over engineered for the Ralph Nader bunch.

^ the only people who would buy it are current XJ owners unless it got 23-25+MPG's HWY and 20-23+MPG's CTY then you'd get the Freedom Drive II (Trail Rated) Patriot and Compass owners to cross over.

My curiousity is piqued by the mention of a solid roof Wrangler in 2016. I have long thought that a new Jeep built on the 4dr Wrangler could sell. But it could go in 2 directions. It could be similar to the old Cherokees. Just take the wrangler, tip back the windshield, put on a solid roof and do a fresh body design and you would have a nice quiet all purpose utility vehicle. Similar to the original Cherokee. But now take that nice quiet and supremely capable Wrangler based utility vehicle and fill it full of sound deadening and leather interior and you have an upscale competitoror for the Mercedes G-Wagon. Eitherway it will be interesting to see what the solid roof Wrangler brings.

I wonder how cost would compare on a stamped steel roof versus the fiberglass Wrangler roof. Could a steel roof Wrangler with non removable doors and etc be built cheaper? If so, I have hope for the steel roof Wrangler.

Ohhh...I like the sound of that man! Though I think it'd be a better competator for the Land Rovers than Mercedes

Yeah, Land Rover competitor too. Not that I could afford a closed roof Wrangler if thats what it is, but it would still be a cool niche vehicle for Jeep and they could build it on existing architecture. Thus, further insuring the survival of the solid axle Wrangler. Unless this luxury Wrangler sold too good and the decided to ditch the solid axle for a better riding IFS system. But thats what they have the G Cherokee for.

Maybe its just me dreaming. But if I ran Jeep I would capitalize on the Wrangler platform. By doing the following:

1) I would make a 2dr Wrangler, an extended 2dr Wrangler (ala 2004-2006 Unlimited) and a 4 door Wrangler.

2) Then on top of those platforms, I would make a closed roofed variant of the 4dr and the extended 2 door. Maybe adding a 2nd set of half doors to it. The closed roof vehicle would start in price at about the same price point as a base Wrangler. Lets call this the Wagoneer model. The top of the line closed roof vehicle would be fully equiped with leather and top of the line amenties. Lets call this the Grand Wagoneer.

3) Then to top it off I would build a pickup on the 4 dr frame. So that would be 6 vehicles built on top of the Wrangler frame. Economies of scale would certainly have to play a roll in bringing the price down on these.

Of course I would also make IFS SUVs similar to the current Grand and some smaller ones as mentioned in the press release. But who cares about them. What would be really cool would be the closed roof Wagoneers and Wranglers built on the same body on frame platform. Do you sopose there is any chance someone at Jeep has the same dream as me with the closed roof Wrangler?

Sure it would be a small niche vehicle, but it really wouldn't cost Jeep that much to make them. And with the closed roof it would be a quieter vehicle that could bring in cross shoppers from other less rugged SUVs.

Ohh another idea... if you extended the rear over hang on that Grand Wagoneer 6" and put in a 3rd row seat you would have an incredibly capable vehicle for some serious offroad expeditions. Not to mention all the aftermarket stuff that would be available for these since they are the same as the Wrangler underneath

^ Idk about 6 variants but a closed roof 4 door would be great and I think calling it a Wagoneer would be sweet and maybe make a special edition (like the Rubicon for Wranglers) that'd be called the Grand Wagoneer but the head honcho at Jeep has already said that the Grand Wagoneer will be bigger than the current Grand Cherokee but have similar styling. Who knows ... we'll see.

The same guy said that he wants to see Jeep manufacture JK-pick ups sooner than later and rumors form several months abck said that the Wrangler factory was expanding a little or something like that. I'd be happy with a single MK replacement that has similar styling to the current Patriot but with an even more capable offroad suspension for the Trail Rated models. So that'd be the current (new and ugly) Cherokee, Grand Cherokee, Wrangler, Wrangler Unlimited, Wrangler P/U, Wagoneer, and Grand Wagoneer. Thats a lot of vehicles right there ... that'd be hard to produce that many vehicles and keep sales up.

Closed roof wrangler sounds nice. I'd most likely give up my dream of the XJ returning for one of those. It would be a tough decision if they made a wrangler pick up a the same time.

^ If all goes well/according to plan of whoever that big wig was (I'm bad with names) we should see the truck first and then the smaller, hard top Wrangler.

To be a competitor for the G wagon, it would need to be ridiculously over powered. People always argue they want a Hemi Wrangler. The counter argument is always that with CAFE and safety regulations etc. it will never happen. What I suspect few people know is that MB makes the G63 and G65 AMG G wagons. The G65 has solid axles just like the Wrangler, and is actually a fairly comparable vehicle if you ignore all the luxury stuff. However the G65 has a 603 hp twin turbo V12, the G63 has a 536 hp twin turbo V8. I mean seriously, imagine if you could go to a Jeep dealer right now and buy a stock Wrangler with a 603 hp V12!

You'll probably have to settle for a Viper V10.
