From Edmunds.com...

"Most people think of Jeeps as tough off-road vehicles that love to get muddy, but the Jeep Compass isn't like other Jeeps. It doesn't look rugged, it's not trail-rated, and as far as we know, it doesn't even like dirt. Instead, it's a car-based design built for the majority of small-SUV buyers, who want a fuel-efficient runabout that's easy to drive around suburbia and loaded with conveniences. Four-wheel drive is available, of course, but it's a single-speed system -- enough to get you through a snowstorm and that's about it. As you can imagine, Jeep purists don't much care for the Compass, which they regard as the antithesis to all things Jeep. But the reality is that the Compass comes much closer to matching the tastes and priorities of the typical SUV buyer than traditional Jeeps do. However, the Jeep Compass faces stiff competition among today's compact, car-based SUVs. Its low price, unusual styling and interesting features are compelling at a glance, but for those who dig deeper, its weak engine and cut-rate interior materials pose a significant liability."

Pretty much sums up the new Jeep vision and their challenges executing on that vision.

I'd love to see a true rally car compete with the Evo and WRX. Just make it a Dodge instead of a Jeep, thank you.

well I'm not letting this thread die....to answer a few questions....

the panda remains one of a few standard cars to get to everest base camp..along with the lada niva..it doesnt profess to be a replacement, just a bloody good alrounder

Fiat does not want jeep for its 4X4 expertise...it has the iveco/landrover with better engine and off road suspension, it made the campagnola, it has the daily 4x4 and its ultimate 4x4 beat the humvee and is replacing lots of army gear around the world, including the shuttered and blinkered UK

Yes its small, but so was the first jeep...bantam if we want to be pedantic...so lets just wait and see, and dont knock it till you try it!!!!

with fuel prices being what they are, I would buy one

I would actually prefer it in Fiat badging. There is no reason to have a bunch of cars that are the same with different names. Note the downfall of Chrysler and GM

The Uno (not Ono) is bigger than the Panda but not available in four wheel drive.

YouTube - Fiat Panda 4x4 vs Range Rover
This entire Top Gear episode can be seen on NetFlix Instant Queue It is Season 10 and one of the last few episodes; forget which one. They talk about it a lot more than on the YouTube clip in the actual show.

I have been considering a Subaru Justy or type vehicle for a daily driver so that I can take my XJ where I really want to and not worry about how I'm getting around the following week. -Not to mention home that day!

When I saw this Top Gear episode on NetFlix, I was sold immediately. I can not wait for it. If all goes well, I will be innovating some great mods for it.

While you're at it, you should toot the Prius horn, wow what a cool vehicle, or the Chevy Aveo, Pontiac G3, Smart Fortwo, Volvo C30, TaTa Nano, to name a few embarrasements

Wow...how could anyone group a Volvo C30 in with cars that are lame...

i hear yea on the 54hp at 5,000rpm but you seen the Rig ? it only needs about 25-30hp to make it move, so with 54hp it'll zip right along . . .

I used to at GEO tracker's too, Now they are every where with 250K miles on them running strong still Some with 31"-33" tires even

Patriots and Compass's made there mark here the Carolina's pretty well ESPECIALLY after the cash for clunkers debut. I liked the idea behind these two vehicles really because previous to the Patriot and Compass, owning a Jeep was about a lifestyle of modding, and tweaking, and building etc. which is great. Anywho, despite various claims, I should note in my experience the Patriot actually seems to perform better than the Compass. These two vehicles offer basic entry into what many of us having been enjoying for years. Granted, these two vehicles are a work-in-progress - I happily welcome them to the Jeep family.

And true story - So, one of my close friends was looking for a vehicle and he liked my WK - but was really turned off by the MPG's and was about to look at some Honda's but he really liked what Jeep represented - so I pointed him to a Patriot, and he's fallen in with his Jeep, and already wants to buy a 2nd one. Since, he's already got the mpg he wants now he wants a second more-rugged Jeep - and he's looking at a Wranglers. Ironically i'm the other way around. Got my gas drinker, but want to get a sipper.

I look forward to seeing future modifications to these vehicles. When Jeep beefs up the interior of the Patriot, or introduces a similar small compact high-mileage suv - I'll probably get one as a daily commute.
