Ford announces hybrid SUV line

Ford announced that will will make two new lines of SUV's, one a gas/electric hybrid like the Prius, the other an all-electric with a gas backup.

How about a hybrid Wrangler? Should Jeep consider it, or is it too impractical for how JP owners use their vehicles to make it a viable vehicle?

Doesn't look as capable as a Wrangler.

1st one- 1989 Cherokee Laredo. 12 great years
2nd one- 2001 Cherokee Limited. Got it before they were gone.

Total ghey crap. A hybrid Wrangler? Why dont they just paint it pink and include an Obama bumper sticker while theyre at it?

Seriously, if Jeep wants to completely alienate its core demographic and ruin the brand image once and for all, a hybrid is the best way to do just that.

I think those were more show than go. Mainly they were a dog and pony show for the government so that Chrysler could get the bailout.

Yup. Chrysler knows that they wont sell unit 1 of hybrid/electric Jeeps but they gotta play the game, I guess. In my book, thats reason #37-B paragraph 7 subsets E, J, and Z why the government has NO business sticking their noses in the automotive industry. Pretty much everything wrong, backwards, or poorly thought out about the cars sold here can be distilled down to some government mandated crap dreamt up by a beauracratic know-nothing who couldnt find the hood latch on a car, let alone has any business dictating how one should be built.

I had an Obama sticker on my Jeep until a few months ago

Can you explain what the downside is of electric drive motors, backed up by a small gas or diesel engine, with much better gas mileage and great low end torque?

Oh right, there is no downside, because that drivetrain is ideal for offroading, just like it's ideal for trains and big mining trucks.

Why would they not sell any?

Because you don't get how good series hybrid would be for a Jeep?

So long as they put at least an Advance DC 9" motor running at least 144VDC. Preferably a Kostov 14.4" at 156VDC.

Then and only then would it be a viable option for an electric drive Wrangler. Anything less and you'd have an inebriated 4WD Prius.

4wd vehicles operate in pretty harsh conditions if used for offroading. Complexity is something you DONT want. All that wiring, batteries, and electronics wont last very long in a 4wd. You want to keep it simple so you can actually work on it. Batteries only last for so long...I mean how long does it take before your cel phone wont hold a charge? How long do the batteries on a cordless drill last? These are items that cost $100-$300 so theyre more or less disposable. Youre not going to drop $30-$50K for a new rig, drive it for 3-5 years then have to put another $5-$8K into it once the batteries die. Trade-in value will go straight to **** with this kind of repair bill hanging over it. And if its over-laden with computerized hardware, there wont be any modifying either. You cant really hot-rod a hybrid and who would want to anyway? If you want to sell a few golf carts and priuses to the greenies, go for it. They wont do anything more than put an organic air freshener in it and drive it to the sierra club meetings. But for a rig designed to actually DO something, that crap will keep people away in droves.

It wont sell because its completely missing the target market. The Jeep crowd clearly likes to build, modify, and wrench on our own rigs. Hybrids and greenie stuff doesnt appeal to this demographic. Hell, itd be like trying to market tampons to men...its just not going to happen because we have no use for it.
