Is is a pretty big whoop for several reasons. Most significantly, this will lead to a complete consolidation of Fiat and Chrysler into a functionally single company, and it'll most likely be based in Detroit, not Italy.

Im a diehard Chrysler fan but I think this is something positive. Over the last few years Fiat has done well with Chrysler unlike the Diamler "Merger of Equals" that basically robbed the company blind and left it for dead.

I guess time will tell.

The American Bantam Company engineered the first Jeep. Willys Overland got the initial production contract. Ford built most of them. The Kaiser Company bought out Willys Jeep, and then AMC bought out Kaiser Jeep. Chrysler bought AMC-Jeep-Eagle and partnered with Daimler-Benz for a time. After Daimler-Chrysler separated, Chrysler went nearly bankrupt for the third time and Fiat now owns Fiat-Chrysler. Jeep changes hands every decade or so, that's no concern for me.

What is a big deal here is that Fiat represents new leadership for Chrysler, away from what killed it the last time. It also lets the company merge with the company that owns Ferrari, Maserati, and Alfa Romeo. Indeed, Fiat-Chrysler Group is the second-largest automotive conglomerate in Europe, behind only Volkswagen AG. Fiat also has a major stake in VM Motori, Italy's premier diesel manufacturer, and the ability to seriously play in the European market. That means more sales for Jeep and access to desirable European technologies, including the diesel engine and 8-speed transmission in the WK2. I'd expect this opens Jeep up for some of that to trickle down.

More than that, though, all signs point to Fiat-Chrysler's merger leading back to Detroit. Now is the time for Fiat to expand its American operations, and where better to do that from, than the Motor City itself? Chrysler already has a place there, and in many cases it's cheaper to build a car here, than to import it. I expect we may end up seeing American-built Fiats alongside our American-built Jeeps.

All in all, I'm impressed with Fiat's leadership and I expect good things to come from the merger. Not like it's the first time Jeep's been bought.
