Chrysler Group CEO Sergio Marchionne and Mexico’s President Felipe Calderon celebrated the start of the 2012 Fiat 500 production today at the Detroit firm’s Toluca plant in Mexico. The company invested $550 million USD, with the assistance of loans from the Mexican government, to build the subcompact model at the Toluca site.

Chrysler said the plant will build more than 120,000 examples of the Fiat 500 for export to the United States, Canada, and South America, as well as to China by the third quarter of 2011. The same factory also produces the Dodge Journey, which is shipped to the U.S. as well as its Fiat twin, the newly revealed Freemont that will be sold in Europe. Get use to seeing this at several chrysler dealership across america.

“With the assistance of the Mexican government, we have been able to prepare the Toluca Assembly Plant for production of the first Fiat, a vehicle that demonstrates the level of cooperation between our two companies and reintroduces the brand to the North American market after more than 28 years,” said Marchionne.

“Mexico is in an ideal position for production of this car. Because of its free-trade agreements with neighbors to both the north and south, it is a bridge between NAFTA and Latin America. And for the Mexican market, where the 500 has already been sold for several years, this marks an important shift from a vehicle imported from Europe to one that is built locally,” Marchionne added.

Speaking to reporters at the event, Marchione also announced that the company is looking to assemble a second Fiat model in Mexico, though he did not get into any specific details.

“We need to decide what we’re going to do with that plant,” Marchionne said. “The likelihood is that we will bring in an architecture that is more versatile and will give us an opportunity to produce more than one top hat or body style. Nothing has been decided.”

The company also confirmed that Alfa Romeo cars will go on sale in Mexico in June or July, starting with the Mito supermini, Giulietta compact hatch and the 159 saloon. Marchionne added that the 4C mid-engine sports coupe, which was shown in pre-production form at the Geneva Salon last week, would also be available in the near future.

The mopar 500 will be out by 2012..... can't wait

2010 Fiat 500 GT Concept built by Mopar Underground

Here are some more pictures of the hottest Fiat 500 on North American soil. In homage to the legendary racing and sport 500s of the past, the MOPAR Fiat 500 GT Concept Car updates that style and brings it into the 21 century.

The inspiration: Fiat Abarth 695

2fiatabarth695-2.jpg

In the tradition of numerous European tuners, such as HAMANN GmbH, Pogea Racing GmbH, Romeo Ferraris, Karl Schnorr and, of course, Abarth, MOPAR (Chrysler's parts and accessories division) has put their own twist on the 500.

Rest assured, this is just the beginning of customized 500s we'll see in this country and the rest of North America. I can hardly wait!

We'll see more cars with flared wheel arches...trust me

Front airdam/lip and facia mask. Could we see variants of these items in Fiat accessory catalogs?

Rear diffuser and special exhaust treatment. Very tasteful, and that stance...LOVE It!

18-inch Alcoa wheels... NICE!

Details of the interior.

Let's jump in and go for a ride! (Note the North American Fiat 500s in the background)

When he first became CEO of Fiat in 2004, Marchionne inherited a company on the brink of failure. It manufactured a lackluster product line and had suffered more than $12 billion in losses over the previous five years.

The design of this car is the result of combined efforts of the Fiat style centre and the Italdesign-Giugiaro. The modern exterior of this car is inspired by the sports cars of 1950s and 1960s. This car is getting high acclaims for not only its size but also for its exterior design.

To transform the company he embarked on several strategic and operational projects. He fired senior managers, upended a bloated bureaucracy, and brought a team of young aggressive managers on board. Then, he reviewed all projects and killed those that could not pass the market test. And he hired new designers, and demanded a portfolio of exciting projects that would bring customers back to dealer showrooms.

I finally went down to rick case to check out the fiat http://www.rickcasefiatusa.com/index.htm and I was very impressed...

Love: *The standard armrest on the drivers seat.
*Rear wheel Disc brakes.
*Skyslider like sunroof
*Leather option.
*$23k Fully loaded
* "Big look" interior
* Mopar edition coming

Hate:* In 2013, fiat is going to lift it 2 inches, put a crude 4wd system under it and call it a Jeep
