That is indeed the 2014 Liberty replacement. However, the Cherokee name isn't confirmed any more-it may be called something else.

Ayup. Don't get me wrong, I respect his opinions, and he's an excellent source, but man, does hearing the same refrain clogging up literally every thread on that forum-and I mean literally. Every. Thread. Has gotten really, really old.

If Norm is right (and he hasnt been wrong as of yet?) then it's gonna be called the Spirit.

Actually scratch that. Almost Nissan's entire line up. Especially the Juke, Cube, and the all new Mallfinder.

I'm sorry but the Pontiac Aztec takes the cake for ugliest vehicle ever or it's up there. Though I agree that Nissans as an accumulative whole are hideous as of late.

heh, one of the comments "if you're going to bend the iconic Jeep grille over the hood of an ugly car you should at least buy it dinner first"

I actually don't dislike this vehicle, except its lack of ground clearance - and I think it's kinda lame they almost seem to have sculpted the black lower cladding to imply where the ground clearance SHOULD be - as in, the rocker panels should be where the top of the cladding is.

If you're going to have fake ground clearance, why stop there? How about some fake disk brakes

and a fake turbo sound

Like I said I don't dislike the vehicle or how it looks, but deliberately obfuscating the vehicle's true lack of ground clearance with clever cosmetics is tantamount to bait-and-switch and frankly I hope they go Aztek on success with this vehicle for it. People who want Subarus can go buy Subarus from Subaru and get a better Subaru because Subaru makes a better Subaru than Jeep does.

Wrangler sales will go up even more now, since that's all that's left Looks like it may have halfway decent ground clearance for a grocery getter.

Just noticed the stock front tow hooks.

That's gotta mean something, right?

btw, notice on the article that Chrysler is denying that that is the Liberty replacement vehicle being revealed in NY. What else could it be, then? A revamped model of the Compass or Patriot?

I wouldn't go that far, many people would be more accurate.

Personally:

soft touch dashboard - Don't care, as long as the dash holds the gauges, switches, radio, hvac controls in decent positions I don't care what it is made of.

power everything, technology galore - Hate this stuff, it all eventually breaks and adds massive amounts of weight to the vehicle.

30mpg - Don't care about MPG, never have never will, performance and reliability is far more important to me. I can't stand all the gas mileage "crap" on newer vehicles: small turbo charged engines (most of these do little for fuel mileage, decrease reliability and increase maintenance costs exponentially) , Cylinder deactivation [aka: MDS] (I really hate this, if I wanted a 4 cyl I would have bought one, if I buy a V8 I want a V8), low bumpers/air dams on 4WD vehicles (just something to damage/rip off when going off-road), low rolling resistance tires (no grip, these slip and slide all over the place), etc.

300+ horsepower - Not that would be nice, though not as vital in a jeep as a car (however I would never say no to more power).

Granted I may be in the minority now but not everyone wants this stuff.

Well, here you go...

http://www.autoblog.com/2013/02/22/2...al-in-a-hurry/

Automakers work very, very hard to keep their new vehicles under wraps until they can present them in exactly the way they want it typically choreographed under the bright lights of an auto show, or perhaps with photos or video in an idyllic location. Spy shooters and leaks, in other words, keep executives and public-relations types up at night.

Take today, for instance, when the team over at Jalopnik got a big scoop the first undisguised shots of the 2014 Jeep Cherokee, a model whose name wasn't even officially confirmed yet. The clandestine images taken inside of a factory were blurry and didn't exactly show off the crossover's radical new contours in the same sort of flattering light that Jeep probably would've wished for their product reveal. So the Auburn Hills automaker has wisely reacted by spilling at least some of the beans on their new model, giving us these four photos and confirming the Liberty replacement's name, Cherokee.

Jeep has only released a handful of shots of the trucklet's new nose, not showing off the profile or rear view (we note that today's spy shots didn't show the rear, either), but they do give the best look yet at what is likely to be one of the most polarizing designs to come out in 2014. The crimped-back seven-slot grille might be a big enough design change to take some getting used to, but add in the Cherokee's aggressive split-lens headlamp treatment, and you've got the makings of a design revolution.

No word yet on powertrain, pricing, or availability, but previous rumors have the Cherokee riding atop an Alfa Romeo-derived platform also shared with the Dodge Dart, which will likely mean that it carries front and all-wheel drive variants and four-cylinder power.

What do you think? Have a look at the images in our gallery and take a gander at the brief press release below, then leave your thoughts in Comments. Is the 2014 Cherokee better or worse now that you have a clear look at it?

Funny thing is my 99 grand Cherokee has a complete soft touch dashboard (surprised the hell out of me when I poked it and it was all squishy) all the power stuff I need (windows and door locks) 20mpg on a very good day, and 195 horsepower and it off roads just as good as a wrangler can. I blame CAFE for driving jeep designers to make things more aerodynamic but the Grand Cherokee turned out looking great and this came out so....horrible!

What kills me is that someone had to look at whatever this thing is sitting next to the rest of the Jeep line up and go "yep, that fits!". I respect Ralph Gilles a lot as head of Chrysler design so I don't get how this could be considered a home run for the same guy who pinned the 300C.

That's dumb logic. Why should Jeep make a small pickup? Toyota already makes a great one. Why should Ram build pickups? Ford already makes great ones. Why should Dodge build the Dart? Ford already makes a great compact car. Why should Chrysler build a minivan? Honda already makes good minivans.

Also, if you look at the side profile, it's ground clearance is comparable to the ZJ and WJ-and, without busting out a protractor, it's A/D angles may be better than the WJ, XJ or ZJ-rear angles are, at least.

This thing is beyond ugly. I was excited when i heard about bringing back the cherokee name. I was anticipating a smaller, rugged version of the GC. I was NOT expecting this suburu tribeca twin...what a shame and lost opportunity for Jeep
