The transfer case will be unchanged. The NP242 may be an option, but unlikely.

Final drive gears will be left as-is, or slightly changed (3.73 may move to 3.55 or somesuch)

4-speed auto will be replaced by 5-speed.

6-speed manual will continue.

Any idea on when dealers would be allowed to take pre orders? I was thinking about pulling the trigger now on a 2011 Wrangler Unlimited, but with the Pentastar coming out with greater gas consumption, I'd rather wait

i havent asked in a month. im waiting for the first rush to pass on them so the price stabilizes. my guess is the dealers wont be negotiating to much on them at the start. especially when they have '11s sitting on the lot

Was at the dealer last night, they are taking orders on the '12s and he said they should start showing up around August 1st.

We test drove an '11 for the Wife, it was nice but I think at this point we're gonna wait for a 2012 as the price is only gonna run about an extra $10-20/month.

Well, the wife is on her way to the dealer as I type this to place our order on the 2012. Dealer knows we have to have her car turned in by August 18th and said he doesnt think it will be an issue.

Take that for what it's worth though, he is a car dealer.

Why don't they bring back the 242? Full time 4WD would be good for folks in the snow states

242 in a wrangler is not what it needs. I had the 242 in my old zj. I bought it used, so i had no choice. If i did i wouldn't have gotten one. And yes i live where it snows. If you think that the 242 is needed in the snow then you shouldn't be driving in it.
The transfer case should be used to help get out when you are stuck not as a make believe hope that it will keep you safe.

I disagree. I find many times that using full time high on my 242 in my XJ very helpful. Texas is likely to get patchy ice so you don't want to be using part time four wheel drive on those kinds of roads. I also find it beneficial in heavy rains.

I'd rather have a full-time 4WD system for my TJ in the winter.

Parsel, where are you at, I got my VIN Monday as well, but no delivery date from the dealer. Thought I could use your locale as a rangefinder

Detroit, my dealer is about 4 miles from Chrysler headquarters so that may make a slight difference in getting ours a little earlier!

I still don't understand WHY we cannot get any new specs from Jeep on these units. I'm looking for tow ratings on the 2012's with this new engine. We can GUESS that it will stay the same, but I'd like to see it in black-and-white from Jeep.
