I emailed Chrysler with this question. The response i got was that there were no power upgrades pending. With the MPG woes, I seriously doubt that they will go V8. A small CRD may be more likely. Either way, the JK needs more power in my book.

I doubt a V8 will appear in the Wrangler. More likely will be a new V6.
The Phoenix family of V6 engines will start being produced in the next year or two. These will replace the current V6 engines being used. You can read up on them at http://www.allpar.com/mopar/phoenix-engines.html

1st one- 1989 Cherokee Laredo. 12 great years
2nd one- 2001 Cherokee Limited. Got it before they were gone.

That is why I bought an 05 instead of a 07. They add weight to the new 07 and then take away power with that 3.8.

Jeep has to go back to basics. 4.0L or a CRD is better than a 3.8 engine that also comes in a mini-van. I saw a JK onwer the other day and he said I liked my TJ. I replied, "Yeah, they don't make them like they used to."

They need to go ahead and drop a Hemi in them. I drove a 08 unlimited Rubicon and it could not move out of its own way. I know it is a Jeep and not a sports car but my 92 Cherokee makes it seem slow.

Jeep cant put a V8 in a Wrangler because of crash test ratings..... If they added that much more power, the lovely sheet metal bodies would fold up like a soda can.
Then too, the MPG crisis wouldn't allow it either I'm sure.

HOWEVER...... there have been some rumors I heard about a new division similar to the SRT but off road themed rather than street racing themed. I read where they were designing a D60 axle for the JK that would be a direct bolt in, and part of the new off road package if it everm comes off the ground

2009 Wrangler drivetrain will be the same as 2008. New features for '09 will include Hill Start Assist and Trailer Sway Control .

I've owned a 4.0 before in my 01 XJ, and driven plenty of them...and I now own an 07 JK 2 door. I think all the people that complain about the power either haven't driven them, or if they did, drove ones with 3.07 gears...mine came stock with a Dana 44 in the rear and 4.10 gears, and it moves just fine. Feels as good if not better than my old 4.0. Don't get me wrong, more power is always welcome, but I have no complaints and like the engine just as much as the old 4.0...if not better because it's new and smoother.

To stay on topic, it would be nice if they added that feature other brands have that uses a V8 if you punch it, but shuts down 2 or 4 cylinders depending on what kind of driving you're doing to save on gas.

You can't really keep a V6 balanced if you shut down cylinders. Honda does have a system for their V6 but it uses very expensive damping motor mounts and (get this) sends sound pulses through the stereo system to cancel out the noise of it being unbalanced so that the driver is tricked into thinking their Honda engine is smooth and quiet.

If you like a system that fools you instead of actually making the engine run smoothly and in balance.
