XJ won't start. Can't figure out why?
The other night my 95 Cherokee would not start. All the lights came on but when I turned the ignition nothing happened. After playing with the Shifter I managed to start the Jeep. This happened one other time and then it would just flat out not start. I've replaced the neutral safety switch (tried cleaning the old one too) but I still can't get anything. I was told the starter is only about 6 months old but there's no way I can prove that. I haven't even heard the solenoid click though. I thought this was going to be another neutral safety story but apparently not. Any Ideas?

See if you get voltage to the small terminal on the starter solenoid when the key is in the "start" position. If no voltage, the problem is in the start circuit before the starter. If you see voltage, the solenoid/starter is no good. You will need to extend the leads on your voltmeter or get assistance to run this check safely.

Have you checked to make sure the NSS has not moved and is out of ajdustment? check to see if the adjustment bolt has backed out a little and the NSS has moved? Also could be starter relay wire or Ignition switch on steering column under dash ?

Could be ignition switch. Mines bad, I have to turn the key very hard. or use a screwdriver after I unlock the cylinder. I dont know why, but it works.

I've tried starting it with the NSS in several different adjustments and still nothing. My reverse lights work too so I guess the NSS is working fine. How could it be a CPS if the Jeep won't even crank?

My ignition switch went out a few years ago and did the same thing. Sometimes it would start and other times it would do nothing. The CPS isn't the problem, it wont keep the engine from turning over.

i have the same prob; if i just push foward on the shifter it will start, but most of the time it starts right up. I thought maybe the switch in twas worn down so i needed to replace it, but idk.

Which, in non-car-tech-ese, means "the switch that makes it so you can only start the car in PARK or NEUTRAL" ...
:-) (I think that's actually part of the "standard" set of federally required safety equipment ...) - _litz

Have you checked your Battery Powers & Grounds?
My Negative Cable corroded out on me, & I'd be able to get lights & what not, but no started action until I hooked my jumber cables to the battery & the other end to the Engine Block. |
