XJ rear tow hooks

Anyone make these? Were they ever a factory option?

I'm building up a beater 88XJ for my fiancee and I'd rather not drop a ton of coin on a custom rear bumper with D-ring tabs. I do want to have a recovery point on the back though.

Any help is appreciated.

the only factory tow hook option I am awate of was a single tow hook on teh drivers side that bolted direct to the frame. For a cheaper option thean a bumper and better than a tow hook go to a wrecker and pick up a factory rear hitch. I go mine for about 30 bucks, Just make sure you get one with a 2" receiver. Then you can attach your tow strap to the hitch pin for a recovery point!

Hey, I'd suggest getting a hitch if you need a recovery point and don't have the extra money to spend on a bumper. There are a few tow hook kits out there, try hitting up eBay.

Thanks guys, it's got a hitch on it right now, but it hangs down so damn low it will get caught on everything. I'm looking for an option that gives a bit more ground clearance

If your looking to do this on the cheap and you can weld, buy some shackle hangers and weld them to a plate that bolts up to the stock bumper location. I saw those somewhere and I'm looking for you, but I just can't remember exactly where it was.

Got the cheapest hitch Reese offered and built a bracket out of that that I bolted to the pseudo frame rail. Not pretty but cheep, btw tow hooks for the front require you to do some drilling if you want to mount them on the back rails.

Look for a Hidden hitch. They tuck up under the bumper nicely.

I put a factory rear tow hook on my 98. I made my own nut strip (welded nuts to strip of steel with holes drilled in in). If you don't to do that, the cost of the factory tow hook bracket + tow hook + nut strips will cost more than a cheap hitch. Downside to the hitch is that if you want to use nut strips you need to remove the rear bumper.

For the tow hook, it only needed 2 nuts on the nut strip, so I made mine small enough to slip into the frame rail without removing the bumper.

X2

The U-haul hitch is a Hidden hitch with a U-haul sticker on top of the HH sticker (the u-haul one peels right off )
Got mine for $85.

here's what the rear factory tow hook assembly looks like (I think this is factory). I found it under the rear seat when cleaning. I don't know how it attached though, especially since my XJ has a factory hitch...

Yup, that's what I have. The bolt holes parallel to the hook (2 holes) are attached with a nut strip inside the frame rail. The other bolt attaches with a nut. I don't think you can use it with a hitch, but that would be unnecessary anyway. Someone probably threw it under the seat when they got the hitch installed.
