Well, I finally got an Ipod (nano) because CDs were about to make me go postal...and I got an Itrip adapter until I can get a new head unit, but has anybody found a good way to mount their Ipod in a pre-97 XJ?
If not I might have to get some 'glass and resin and hack up the factory console Street Trucks style...

If I can remember later, I'll try and snap a pic of where I mounted my XM Roady tuner. Its below the inst. cluster between the radio and the steering wheel. I would think and iPod would go there pretty easily.
I feel you on that CD's driving you nuts bit. I down graded to get the XJ but my last car had an in-dash CD changer and lots of storage cubbies all over the place. Thats one of my biggest complaints about the Cherokee.
Now if I could only decide where to put my damn CB. Man this thing is short on space... :

how about in that blank panel above the cigarette lighter? Just create an easy mounting system. Here's what I'd do:
Get a case for your nano, one you wont care about screwing with. Get a piece of that velcro with tape on the back(both sides; hook and loop) and trace the shape of your nano on it. Cut out the shape. Stick the LOOP side of the velcro to the case (this way, when it wears out, you can always just replace it) and the hook side to the panel. To keep the velcro on when the heat melts the adhesive, I would also drill four holes, one in each corner of the hook side, into the panel, and rivet it in.

i was at best buy this weekend when some friends were looking to buy new car speakers. as i was standing around i saw some little thing made by caselogic that goes between the seat and center console. there were two little pockets on either end, a compartment in the midle on the bottom, and a special spot for ipods on top with some sort of special material to hold it in place. it was pretty cool and seems like it would work. whenever i get a chance to use my ipod in my jeep i just throw it in the cup holder but i dont like that. when i finally buy my own itrip or something ill be buying this caselogic thing too.

velcro it right behind the shifter or stick it in a cup holder. I know mine is not a pre 97, but I stick mine in the ashtray/coin thingy. with my elbow on the center console it is perfect placement for it sticking it in the cupholder gives me a decent angle too. If I didn't have that coin cup there I probably would have velcroed mine down there.

I don't remember exactly how he did it, but before I got the XJ to play with it was my brothers first vehicle. He built a box out of plexiglas, and had the ipod in it. he had some jacks or something so it could plug in. I don't remember where he put the box, but it was made to fit into something.

I hace the DUO TransDock it's a cradle, charger, and FM transmitter all in one and it has a nice moving elbow and attachments to make it longer. It works great in my 94.

when you do get a new head unit i would recommend an alpine. they work really well with the ipod. i have the cda 9856 and its sweet. you dont need to mess around with your ipod you just plug 1 cable in the bottom that takes care of everything. and then its not ghetto rigged through a 1/8 audio jack. you also dont take up your cigarette lighter for power either.

JeepinJeremiah, do you have a pic of the TransDock handy?
I think for now I may just go with velcro, but if I ever get around to building a custom center console I may include an Ipod mount...and a writeup. I appreciate all the replies guys

My friend has a alipne head unit that controls the Ipod 100%. He put the cabel that ran off the back of the unit in the glove box. It charges the Ipod and he never has to worrie about someone stealing it in the locked glovebox.
